Id like to change out my stock rollbar for a complete cage. Any suggestions ???

A YJ roll bar will pretty much fit right in your CJ. Why are you looking to change we may be able to give better advice if we knew what your plans were.

Using your existing sport bar and adding on would be the least expensive way to go. I purchased a add on cage kit and had it welded on.

Im with TORXHEAD but again what you are using it for will really determine what you need:chug:

This is what I just added to my CJ7 . I got it from Morris4x4 for $330.00(free ship)and had a local guy weld and install it for $140.00.

I like the looks of that. Doesnt seem like it would interfere with any top either. :chug:

:)Pete,

Your right.........people have to understand that without proper frame support both front and rear in the event of a roll over the roll bar / cage effectiveness will be compromised ........

Not to say that anything you do will not help it somewhat and surely would be better than nothing in some case's.

Although most cages I see are Mild Steel which if probably sized is OK but never have enough lateral or diagonal bracing to be considered a real roll cage in the since of the word.
I guess that's why there called sport cages?

Yeah you have to buy the part that goes from the back of the dash to the floor then tie it in to the frame. I plan to keep adding as I can to make it as safe as poss. I just couldn't afford the Spider,Rock Hard,or other nice ones.

Thats good. :chug: Its nice to know you build right off of it. I just looked at this pic and said " Wow he needs to tie into the frame. :D" Your Blue Cj looks to be a little taller as well.

So, would anyone have any advice on or know of something to ADD to factory CJ7 bar AND tie into the frame... Oh yeah I know cheap doesn't mean quality... I'm a union electrician, however I don't have a couple grand collecting dust but would like the safety of a full cage.

Of course, a cage tied into the frame is a better way to go. I have seen a number of CJs go over, including my own, with only minor damage and no frame tie in. Including a full end over end, cage bent but still intact which totaled the Jeep. The pictures shown appear to be in Cougar Buttes, Ca. where the vehicles don't really have fall to fall, although a rollcage is nice to have something to hook onto in case of a tip over.

:)CJ7 ...........If your serious about protection and I'm sure you are then take your Jeep to a qualified Off Road shop or Race Car builder in your area.

There are so many factors that come into play when building a safe cage for your vehicle. Mostly centered around speed.......and what is the maximum force and potential load for the given use.

In most cases these Jeeps see slow speeds and tend to get high centered and slowly roll over once or twice.

But lets just say that you were on a side hill and rolled over and flat ground was 100 ft below you on a 30% angle downhill..........totally different approach to building adequate protection for a slow roll as compared to rolling down a hillside.

Keep in mind the roll cage is but just one part of many to survival. Like an adequate 5 point harness & side bars that keep your body parts inside along with an adequate seat and mounts that will withstand the load should all be considered.

Not trying to scare you but most people think that a few bars hastily welded up will protect them from almost anything and that is not the case.

Do you plan for the worst or somewhere in between?...............Your call!

Exactly, I understand and agree with you. My CJ7 sees mostly 25 MPH or less and when on the main roads rarely ever above 45 MPH. With that being said, what if a deer ran out I was front of us going 45....?I veered of road and flipped down the mtn. No, I don't have 5 point belts and I knew this when I bought my new Bestop recliners.... I'm not knocking anybody but I will not spend money on a rollcage unless I feel safe afterwards. Hence, me taking my jeep to a professional shop, about 3 in my area, I know drag cars have cages and they travel 200 MPH! I know I need a offroad shop, reputable at that to build and install my cage. I own a welding rig but am not a professional. I don't climb rocks and hit mud holes wide open. I wish to preserve my CJ7 and have a good time too. Chances are, we will never need a full cage that's welded to the frame. I was looking for input and experience from fellow cj owners and by the way this sight has been a blessing to me since I have owned my CJ7 . I have not taken my jeep to a shop yet, but I am guessing they can do anything I want and as extreme as I want for alot less than the big company bolt up deals.. I do however still stare at them online and wonder how to wash my money around so I can buy one;)

Will you have done the first and most important thing and that is to understand that all cages or roll bars are not created equal........and hopefully if you decide to install one do so under the premise that you have educated yourself on what you have limit wise rather than something that someone else says will work.

I do race Drag Cars and we build are cages under strict guidelines as set forth by NHRA and SFI ........A set a prints is purchased and all bars with wall thickness and sizes are specified.......Of course we use chrome moly and everything is tig welded with 309 stainless rod. All the tubing is factory marked and before we paint or powder coat we have a NHRA tech guy stop by to certify and tag the cage............

lol This was my 1'st time on the rocks and on 31" tires I thought He (CJ5 ) did good. It was also when I decided I need more protection

Good eye Torxhead. I was with MJR on Bullfrog trail,Cougar Buttes,Johnson Valley OHV.

I bought mine cause it was made from .120" wall tube, I get to keep my E-brake, glove box, and leg room. I can add to it to make it better, like tie in behind the dash to the floor, floor to the frame, add Dash bar, cross bar's, and seat belt bar behind the seat. Like Torxhead said, I will at the most do a slow roll or two where I play.

:)

That's a bunch of :censored:
People can die in rollovers for lots of reasons.......
And plenty of folks have walked away from roll overs with the factory bar and top.
I've never seen a factory bar pull thru and out of the sheet metal where I live.
And I've seen a lot of nasty Jeep rollovers.
Of course, you have your opinion and I will tell you mine....:D
