1976 CJ5 258. MC2150 carb, PSC steering, Team Rush upgrade, 1 piece rear axles, all electronics relayed. Coming soon: Herculined tub, camo paint- and a bunch of filthy, muddy kids!
So- my CJ5 has about a 2-3 susp. lift already. I'm looking at getting 2" more.

What can I do? I've never done a lift of any kind. Am I looking at a big expense?

I don't care for any body lifts.

Any advice?

Buy a 4" lift.:chug:

Well, I guess that's the gist of it. What kind of cost am I looking at, and what changes does it include? Shocks, springs, shackles? I hate sounding like a dumbass. I've turned my share of wrenches, but never a lift of any kind.

What would a kit include, and how much trouble is it?

Different kits have different components. The best advice I can give is go to the lift kit sites and see what their kits include. Almost everyone has installation instructions posted online.

As for cost, you need to do some shopping around once you decide on your lift. The price you pay is entirely up to you! :chug:

All that plus longer brake lines, and maybe a new driveshaft.
There's kits from $500 to $1300 some include more than others.
checkout someplace like Morris at the top of the page they carry a few.

This is probably not for everyone as it is "buy at your own risk", but I found a set of 4" Superlift springs and bushings through a classified section for $100. All I had to supply was longer brakelines, shocks, and I had my drivelines shortened and lengthened, and bought new U-bolts.

The brakelines can be made at a shop relatively cheap, dont let some of the specialty places scare you with their overpriced stuff...you do not need braided lines. Mine ran me $35 at a place called House of Hose lol.

Drivelines were also surprisingly cheap...I believe it ran me $75 or $80 to have them done at a local shop.

Do not re-use your U-bolts. The dumb things are expensive, but they are something you will want to replace.

Bushings are likewise expensive (polyurathane is the way to go) so if you can reuse the ones you have, do so unless they are worn and need replaced.

As I said, buying used is risky unless you get a chance to inspect what you are buying and have enough experience to know fatigued spring packs from useable ones. But you can save some money going this route.

How much?

If you already have two inches a shackle reversal in the front and a shackle in the rear is the best way to go and will improve the handling. That will run you about 4-5 hundred. The issue is when you lift them that much you probably going to need new drive shafts and that is where things get pricy. That is gong to run probably $700 just for the drive shafts. But I wouldn't go with a four inch lift sense you already have the 2 inches. You would just be throwing away what you have. Oh ya, you have to do something with the steering too with that much lift. Drop pitman arm will do it if you have a steering box. If you have a bell crank you'll just figure something out.

Roger that.

No problem CJ, I'm part of at least 5 forums for my projects. Easy to mix up the different rules.

idk like $50 for all of them
Sale items belong in the classified section.
You are so close to being zapped from this site!!!

I know you can read, because you have made posts!

Reopened because I'm nearly as frustrated as I was yesterday and the closing of the thread is not fair to the OP.

ive got some 4in lift shackles front and rear i just took off mine if anyones interested.

Realize that for a shackle to provide 4 inches of lift, it would have to be 8 inches longer then the stock shackle Picture that in your head or get out a tape measure to help you. That is the most unsafe thing you could ever do to your vehicle...especially a short wheel base Jeep.

What?!? Brand new CJ drivelines wont cost you a fraction of that  . And as I said, you can have your drivelines lengthened and shortened for less then $100

This thread is starting to get confusing :wtf:

Tell me about it. I'm a serious diy guy but I'm gonna have to at least go to a shop and get an in-person opinion from someone.

About the driveshaft, I've had that done before for some of my muscle car engine swaps and its relatively cheap.

It would be nice to find a local guy with a lift on the same thing and take some notes and pics. But then, I also live in the sticks- as in Deliverance.

There are very few drive shafts on cjs that can be modified to a four inch lift. Plus if you want a decent set of drive shafts with well biult cv joints it will cost you every bit of seven hundred dollars to get them done right. Not saying you can't get it done for less but it sucks to snap a drive shaft the first day out and know you could have saved a lot of money by just getting well built ones to start with.
