Hi, I was hoping I could get some advice on whether or not Holley carbs are almost impossible to adjust once it is set. My '72 CJ5 came from Colorado so it was adjusted for a high altitude and when I moved back to Pennsylvania it's running very rich and I cannot for the life of me get it working.

I took it to a shop and they told me you can't adjust them easily and it's simpler to just buy a new one??? I'd rather not drop that kind of money if I can rebuild or find a trick to adjust it correctly.

Anyone else have this problem? No I cannot provide a model or even CFM, I can't see the part number anywhere on the carb unless it's underneath.

Any help is appreciated.

thanks,

Tizzer

I have a 72 with a 2 bbl Holley carb as well. What I did was to adjust both mixture needles/sides to highest possible manifold vacuum. Works well for me. Make sure you have the same approximate amount of turns on both.

Clockwise all the way in till it LIGHTLY bottoms, then, One and one half turns counterclockwise should get you reasonably close for fine tuning starting point.

There are Holley carbs where the fuel mixture can be adjusted by changing the jet size. The jets are accessed by removing the float bowl. Auto and speed shops carry jets.

Thank you everyone. I've tried all suggestions here except changing the jet size. I have never attempted that before, so would I go smaller or bigger or do you just have to try until you get it tuned right?

I would suggest going a couple of sizes smaller. There has to be internet info on how to swap them.
