258 straight six

5 with a filter.

I've been run'n Castrol, 20W-50 in mine for decades.

Many years ago I took a part time job at a parts store. One day an elderly woman called wanting to know what to do. She oil light had come on so she checked it and it was not on the dip stick and didn't know what to do. I told her she needed to put oil in it,she asked what kind? I told her it didn't really matter at this point. She said her husband had told her not to mix oils. I told her if she mixed them now and to get it changed afterward as it probably needed it anyway.

Later that day she drove to the store wanting to buy a filter and oil saying that her neighbor had offered to change it for her.she said she had filled it up but really had to change because her neighbor had told she could not mix different kinds of oil like she had.

So I asked her what brand of oil she filled it with and she said with a big smile

"Wesson"

Whatever works. I knew a kid that got a bunch of misbranded cooking oil from the local school and used it in his field bomb for 3 or 4 years till he got his liscence. It works.
As far as mixing oil, Years ago when non detergent oil was common, Engines would gum up and if anyone would mix oils and put detergent oil in it would release all that gummed up material through the engine and ruin it. With todays oils and non detergent oil being preety rare, even if there's any left out there. I don't think it's as much of an issue as it used to be.

My FSM says 6qts with filter change!!!!! but i do 5 1/2 i think there might of been a factory gasket/grommet on the dip stick cap. so i use a little more oil. not sure if that's ok but its what i'v been doing.

Put in 6qts w/filter chg. :chug:

Then your a qt low.:D
Are you using the OEM dip-stick? Oil pan??
LG

I just bought a re-manufactured one and only had oil from a pressure test...it took exactly 5.5 quarts. So I'm assuming mine will be in 5 quart range on changes? lol...I'll forever be a quart low :D

6 qts won't hurt a thing and can help when you have your jeep sidehill and you don't want the oil pump suk'n air.

I have always used 5 and it puts it right on the full line.

I remember there were some that came with a bigger filter than mine. I noticed this because if one of these got air and bounced the front end the filter would make contact with the motor mount and crack. oil everywhere.

6 quarts. You own a Cj. We know it leaks. Its like preventive maintenance. :D

This is a CLASSIC example of why I LOVE this forum. No matter what the question, there is ALWAYS a discussion and varied opinions
