258 with automatic transmission?

Hello everyone, I see a lot of threads on v8's with automatic Transmission and standard shift Transmission but nothing on the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l /6 cylinder. Anyone running this set up? it will be a daily summer/pavement driver...

It would be helpful if you filled out your profile with details of your Cj. I have a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with an automatic. Mine is an '81 with a TF999 and Dana 300 . If yours is an earlier model it may have the QuadraTrac GM Turbo 400 . Heres a link that may help you.

Mine is a 86', AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and auto...brain fart but think tranny is the 999 also the 300....oh,got the 44 rear option too

Its just an Idea...my wife will be driving this also and she has a hard time driving a standard shift...

The only issue with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and automatics is that more CJs came with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and a manual Transmission . The first automatics in CJs were in '76.
You can try to find a TF999 for a CJ.

If you are wanting to replace a manual with an automatic the automatic does not have to be from a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l -6. the autos from a V8 will bolt in just fine. Just remember to get everything you may need. I.e. drive shafts, torque converter shifter, linkages etc.

I have never owned a CJ with an auto but I am assuming they use a kickdown cable or rod. If so something will have to be done with that. I am not sure if there is provisions for it on the 6's. It may be difficult to find a linkage for that (if you pull it from a V8) but shouldn't be too hard to fabricate.

Someone else may be able to chime in on the kickdown.

What V8? Do you have specific plans or just any V8 and Auto? You now have a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .
The AMC 304 V8 was offered in the late 70's and it it came with an auto it would be the GM Turbo 400 , which was then matted up to a QuadraTrac Tcase. That route wouldn't require any adapter. There are other options that wouldn't requre an adapter. You could get the engine, tranny and TCase from a ford, Chevy or other make. That would require the drive shafts to be modified for length. Actually almost any swap would require driveshafts.

I just went through this with Vicki. I was a little luckier and was buying one at the time. Id say dont give up on the manual to quick. It'll be alot easier to let her burn up a clutch and just replace that.


Ive been working on my Laredo with an automatic so all this is fresh in my mind. Mind did come with an auto but all the linkage for the steering colum was removed and it uses a cable actuated B&M shifter.Thats probably the easiest route for you. While I was replacing mine with another used one I started thinking about the bands and clutches inside and started praying mine was rebuilt.

Things you'll need off the top of my bald head , shifter , Transmission ,tourque converter , driveshafts, auto pedal assembly , Transmission cooling lines and a radiator that will accept them. Just some things to think about. I gotta head back down to the garage myself.
