Looking at swapping my Dana 30 with drums for a Dana 30 with discs for my 77 CJ7 .
My question, is, as I search the web, I'm seeing Dana 30s with 3.55 gears.
Is the 3.55 a generic term for 3.54, or are they different gears?
Question is will a Dana 30 with 3.55 gears work?
(Rear is 3.54 as well)

Thanks in advance.

Yes it will work. My friends truck runs 4.10 and 4.11 and has no problems at all.

As long as you're within 0.10, you're fine.

You'll see a bigger effect by differences in tire pressure than you will by a 0.01 difference in the gear sets.

So I should be able to use a wrangler front end??
Sorry of that sounds like a stupid question, but I've never swapped axles, and I want to make sure I don't get in too deep.
Thanks.

A wrangler front end has a driver side drop. You need a passenger side drop. Look for a narrow trac 3.54 Dana 30 out of a pre 82 CJ with disks. Then it will mount up no problem. Wranglers are completely different.

Well, the Wrangler YJ front end will have a different bolt pattern ( 5x4.5 vs the CJ's 5x5.5) and be at least 4" wider than a CJ axle and then the spring perches are not correct IIRC but the biggest issue is...

The differential is on the driver's side on a YJ and the passenger side on a CJ. Unless you plan two swap transfers cases that is kind of a big obstacle...:D

Wrangler TJ Axles are a bigger issue yet.

IMHO if you are going to that much trouble I would be slipping something better than another low-pinion, small-u jointed Dana 30 in there.

Thanks, Now I know what to limit my search on. I am just looking to upgrade to discs, and it seems cheaper than piecing a kit together.
