Hey just a question since I'm still learning the AMC'S. I am restoring a 1977 CJ5 with a good running AMC 304 . What I'm wondering since I'm taking my time anyways is do I move up to a 360 or just be happy with my AMC 304 which does run fine. Again is a long running project and I'm taking my time. Trying for a do it right not wishing I had .

I love my AMC 304 . 360 has stronger lower end parts., more HP, more torque, but I'm not sure it's needed. Depends on what you are doing with it. What are you going to be doing with your jeep?

Wooly

You could get a lot of opinions on that, my first answer is it depends on just what you want to do with it. Like the increase in power puts a lot more load on the driveline which should be compensated for to help prevent stuff from breaking.

You see less and less 304s, I'd keep it.

If you want to make things better/different, save your money for axles and transmissions. this game is all about the gears.:D

Weekend cruiser. Kinda Ina dead zone for anything more. Flat land and sand. Most action it will get is family vacation to the beach.

If you want my 2¢, that answers your question right there... If you're just going to beach cruise with it, keep the AMC 304 , tear it down, freshen it up, throw a newer more modern ignition system on it, a 4 barrel aluminum intake, a small 4 barrel carb, that'll give you a little more HP (not much ;)) and a little more MPG (again not too much ;)) and you'll be good to go :chug:

You stated that you were “restoring” a 1977 CJ. Please do not castrate your AMC V8 CJ just to stuff a SBC under the hood; there aren't that many to good ones left. Keep your Jeep, Jeep! :chug:

Good running AMC 304 , keep it a good running AMC 304 .... I made the jump to a 360, to be honest it ain't a blistering high horse power beast and likely never will be .... If I were you I'd keep the AMC 304 , maybe upgrade it a little (the upgrade parts will go on the 360 with out problems) and run it until either it gets seriously tired or you decide the 360 is the only way to go. Either way you will be well served. Please don't become yet another SBC owner. Too easy.

So, it's not just mine that sounds like that.....

^^ Just curious, why do you guys run split exhaust? dual pipes is a top end thing right? I use my Jeep primarily as a crawler so a little back pressure seems like a plus to me. The reason I ask is I see quite a few off roaders with dual exhaust. Am I missing something?
