Started leaking down the block from one valve cover, caused a lot of smoke. No biggy. Then came the wtf, started spewing oil from rear oil pan seal. This happened because I dropped the pan to retrieve a broken dipstick. So to remove pan fully, I'd have to drop starter and lift block to clear mounts. Is there an easier way?

Nope. Be glad, removing the pan on a CJ is considered easy.

That's what I was going to say. When I had a 360 in my CJ, I never had to lift the block to pull the pan. I did a re-ring job, and installed all new gaskets while the engine was still in. Good luck.

I'll give it the ole college try. Got a rubber one piece gasket from napa

I had trouble finessing my oil pan off and on. (AMC 304 mind you, not sure if different) but didn't need to remove starter OR lift from engine mounts...

;)

Just took some time and patiens (and twisting tugging pulling couple :censored: words...) etc...

:D
