Just upgraded from dial-up to Verizon 3g internet. World of a difference in speed, of course. So far we are really pleased. only problem is I cant set-up the wireless network. My router and modem seem to have an address conflict, since I cant use them both at the same time. And my router searches for an internet connection before I can access the setup App. Which since the modem has to be off it cant find one. I am using a Netgear but will try a Linksys a friend loaned me.

LOL

Glad to hear you made it to a 'higher' level!

I'm confused as to what exactly you mean by your router and modem have a conflict. Was your router configured for a different modem at one time? Did you try resetting the router back to defaults and see what happens?

Yea I reset the modem. But I think they have an address conflict because I can't use the internet port on the router (the modem is connected directly by USB to the PC). When trying to connect I get a server error. I guess the router feels violated by me trying to access the wrong port. Verizon said their modem is set to use 192.168.0.1 which is the same as the router default. But I get a response from the router when using a LAN port but it wants to search the internet port while initializing for an internet connection. The router will not let me in to the admin. app. unless it finds an internet connection. I thought of setting up another net card and being connected to both a LAN and the internet port. But I would rather try the linksys router first since I have always found linksys to be more user friendly than netgear.

There is your problem (my Brother did the same thing). You only use the USB connection when you are NOT using a router or your PC does NOT have a Ethernet connection. You CANNOT use both. :)

Unplug the USB cable and plug the WAN (Wide Area Network - modem side) Ethernet cable into the modem. Then using another Ethernet cable plug the PC into the LAN (Local Area Network) port.

I bet everything starts working as intended...

You never need a WAN connection to configure a router - if you did, your LAN would drop out every time your internet connection had a problem.

The reason you can't configure the router is because you have the USB cable plugged in and the router only allows a PC to execute the setup from the LAN side (unless explicitly configured for WAN access).

The 192.168.0.1 IP of the modem and the router should not cause any problems - because -

  • The modem IP is on the WAN side of the router and the modem should use DHCP - it will assign an IP to the WAN side of the router.
  • The LAN side of the router is not addressable by the modem (it can't see it) so there can't be a conflict.
  • The LAN side of the router should (by default) have DHCP enabled and will assign IP's to your PC's automatically.

I do have a pretty good grasp of how this all goes. But here is my real problem. This is the modem. Only USB. And I have it plugged into my PC not the router. I had an address conflict with this router before and had to manually assign IPs. So if I can get the linksys running without it automatically searching for the internet connection.

Aw :dung:! :) I thought you had a hard modem, not a 3g USB card... :( Sorry about that!

So - let me get this right... You have a USB 3g card and it plugs into your PC. You want that PC to act as bridge to your router to supply all your other computers internet access, correct?

If so, you need to configure an internet bridge.

First, pull the USB card so you can configure the router, plug only the router into the PC via the Ethernet cable (into a LAN port), login to the router and change the IP to something like 192.168.0.100 (so it won't conflict)

Once you change the router IP then you can put the USB modem card back in - no conflicts...

Now you have to setup a software bridge in Wondow$... I'm assuming you have XP...

I could talk you through it but there are very good tutorials on the net for this - basicly you will share the internet connection.

Xactly that is where I was heading but this is my hole problem with that is;
from my first post, "And my router searches for an internet connection before I can access the setup App."

So when I get an extra hour I will fiddle with the other router and if that does not fly I will put in a second net cart and try that. But now that you have bounced a few things off me I think I would have to do this for the routers sake. Give it a WAN input and a LAN output.

My last resort is to try one of these

Glad we are now making a little sense... BTW - What netgear router are you using? I looked up about ten of them today and I could not find one that required a WAN connection to be active for configuration... They all required a LAN Connection but not both.

Internet Connection Sharing!!! Coworker has an INTERNAL DSL modem from AT&T and has 2 ethernet cards. 1 going to a Wireless Access point and one going to a switch, and he uses his computer as the router. Of course he is running XP Pro SP3 ... couldn't tell you if it works with Vista or not.

Crust, you might want to skip using the installation wizard from the CD and just open Internet Explorer and type in 192.168.1.1 for the linksys router. That should allow you to access your router manually. Username for a linksys router is blank and the password is admin. This is factory default settings

I have cable connection. I have learned that wireless is so easy to break into... i.e. I used to 'borrow' my neighbors connection... oops my bad :)

Sorry! I normally don't try to talk over someone's head on this stuff. Pretty much what I was saying is you can get into your router without using the setup CD and therefore it won't give you the conflict that you are getting now. Somewhere on the setup page of your router, it gives you the option to change the address of that device. I would change the last 1 to a 2 and then rerun your setup and see what happens there.

Just an up date. I dumped the netgear router and went with linksys. fixed the problem. I was using the IP to access the setup directly but the lame thing still wanted to find a WAN connection.

So, the wife took a trip with friends and wanted to use the Wi-Fi in the hoten and had trouble. So, our friend who is pretty tech savvy (she worked for Lotus back in the day) set up like six more connections until she got it right. Now that jacked our wireless setup.

Now we got a bluetooth adapter and the wife even set up a connection and setup the main PC as a print/network server. NICE:chug:

I upgraded to the linksys wireless N router, ive had my problems but the foreigners that talked me through it helped alot! But if i had a decent working desktop that wasnt ancient i would be running 100mbps these dang laptops can only run 54 which is kind of lame. Im thinking about investing in a good desktop so i can enjoy my 100mbps!

Ah yes my sweet Susie. But only if the administrator is not going the extra inch to setup security. I like only allowing users by electronic ID and passwords are helpful when you have a twisted imagination and a good vocabulary.
