Going to buy the FI kit from Howell for my 84 CJ. Do I really need to spend the extra money to get
the CA emissions one? Worried about emissions testing here in Douglas County in Castle Rock, CO.

Any ideas?

I got this from the horses mouth so to speak they said every kit they sell will pass emissions I didnt get into details with them because I don't have to pass anything to drive stuff here.

When I first purchased my kit, I screwed up and ordered the non-emissions version. So I notified Howell and they sent me another chip and 02 sensor. The added cost of my error made it an expensive one. So I would advise that you purchase the smog legal version. If you were to compare the two types in a performance test, I really don't think you would notice any difference.

Since this is bone stock is there something preferred I should do now (while I am spending money) in regards to the distributor and coil?

The best ignition change would be an MSD. Otherwise there is a "Team Rush Upgrade", which is adapting a larger distributor cap to prevent spark arcing and has better contacts and you can install a Ford E type coil if your existing one is tired. Getting a reman distributor will provide better distributor advance since the Howell computer does not provide distributor control.

I am in lakewood CO. I am working on a 78 CJ5 and I called the emissions tester. He remarked..."I dont look at the fuel system, I just make sure that it passes visual inspection (smog stuff like EGR and air pump)". That being said, I went with the Howell CA kit. I dont want to finish and have to start all over...we should get together and compare builds!

A smog man told me the first thing they look at is the "Sticker" which gives the C.A.R.B. number. Then they are able to look up the info required.
