Just picked up my first CJ7 . It's an '86 with a AMC 360, 727 Torqueflight Transmission and Warn lockout hubs. Not sure what Transfer Case it has. Having trouble shifting in and out of 4wd. Lock the hubs, shift to neutral, but 4wd selector is tough to move. When it does go into 4wd, tough to get it back to 2h or neutral. Have read that a slow roll in gear forward or reverse might help. Thoughts?

Sweet combo man, it should have a Dana 300 , and yes on the roll forward and backwards it will mesh the gears together to shift, it might also need a fluid change

Nice. Thanks for the quick reply. Going to try the roll method and see if that works!

Do Just like gert said. They can get a little stiff getting into gear when shifting

With the hubs locked, you should be able to shift from 2hi to 4hi while moving and in gear.

For shifting into and out of 4L, first try it stopped with Transmission in N. If that doesn't work, roll forward or backward slowly, shift Transmission into N, and apply steady pressure to shifter until it shifts or you coast to a stop.

As noted above, change the fluid first. Lock the hubs and slow roll. The T case will shift as designed. Give it a gentle yet firm tug as you roll and it will slip in. Just DON’T grab and yank.

Good stuff, guys. Going to give it a try this weekend and see if it works. Fluid was recently replaced so hopeful the slow roll does the trick.
