1973 CJ5
My first and a new jeep owner here with a have a couple questions.

I just picked up a 1973 CJ5 and my wife and would like to get a hardtop for it. Looking at a new aftermarket top/doors out of LA. Does anyone have any thoughts on aftermarket tops?

Looking at the hardtop, it shows it adding a tab to the sun visors so the top can clip in. My CJ5 doesn’t have sun visors and I don’t see a mounting area for those (picture below). Does anyone have a pic or reference on where the sun visor would mount to?

Don't think that windshield was meant to have sun visors. In this picture you can see the type of windshield I have and how the visors are attached.

The first time I saw a hardtop for a flatfender I thought it was a homemade job.

I'm not sure if Willys was actually making them or if they were after market. I haven't found a whole lot of info.

Anyway, by 73 AMC owned the Jeep brand, but the hardtops still had that weird homemade look.

I found this pic. Not sure if anyone makes repros, maybe keep your eyes open at swap meets or craigs list and ebay. Or you could swap in a frame like the pic above, is that a 76? And then if you go for a hardtop or soft top it would be for that year frame. The top of the 73 frame is wider, I think.

There was never a factory made hardtop made for the CJ5 they were all aftermarket thats why they look that way. And all these years later they are hard to find and cost alot for a good one.

I have a Orville top on for my jeep in the winter. It has the Jeep AMC special equipment sticker inside it.

My jeep is a '77, So when I put the hardtop on, I have to use a special windshield frame bottom gasket, that holds the windshield up to the more vertical angle, like yours. Also, being '77, I had to make some filler pieces as my windshield narrows at the top.

Being a 73, you won't have those dramas.

I found mine on craigslist, and paid $600. Finding a used metal top would be the least expensive option. Putting them on and off isn't a big deal. I have a friend come over and we lift it on, and then I bolt it down. It takes me about 2 hours or so. Really nice for the cold, and I like the look! As soon as spring arrives though, I take it off, and go for the soft top!

CJ5 hard tops are rare but they are out there you can probably pick one up on craigslist but everyone I have seen for sale is $800+ and usually pretty banged up. Most CJ5s had soft tops and I also dont believe they had sun-visors

$800? Guess it's where you live, the last CJ5 hardtop I sold for $200 and it was in great shape.

They never came from the factory with hardtops.
Sears, Boston Tops, Porter and Reed among others made aftermarket hardtops for flat fenders.

The sun visors were offered on the 74 model, same windshield as yours.

Great find! I enjoyed reading that. "Made of aluminum, the Boston Top is light weight and easily handled." As seen in this graphic, even a lady can do it! LOL! Thanks :chug:
