Guys,

What is the little metal box mounted on the inner fender on my 73 CJ5 ? I think it has something to do with the ignition system. Engine is AMC 304 . The distributer is original, not the kind with the white plastic vacuum advance dome.

Thanks,
Chilly

That's going to be your ECM for the ignition. Originally, your Jeep had a Prestolite ignition system and a metal ECM. The Prestolite dizzy has the plastic dome.....so Im assuming somebody swapped it out for a newer Duraspark system, which would also mean a newer style plastic ECM. Am I correct?

73s had points. Maybe someone swapped in something. Check if you have points.

If you do have points, It might be a regulator for the alternator.

Put on a picture please. :D

Definitely points. I do believe you hit it on the head with the alternator regulator suggestion.

My 73 CJ had that. Pretty sure that is the old voltage regulator. I replaced it with a solid state one long ago. It was a listed replacement item from a general auto parts store.
