Build Thread 75 CJ-5 RestoMod
That was the plan, with body armor winches and all the extra :dung: I've got planned for it I may be close. But I guess that's what mock
Up is for.

Looking good so far. :dbanana: Plans for painting the frame, or maybe powder coated? :dunno:

Under a load you will be fine, its when you hyper extend the springs that you could find yourself in trouble. Hyper extend? Like when you pop over a bump and jump the front end slightly. Or you load up on one side and float the other side which is something that happens fairly frequently. ..... While the frame is bare, wouldn't it be MUCH easier to replicate the perches than when she's all loaded up? I know you really don't want to redo the perches, but now is the time. You've done a beautiful job so far, don't short change the job now.

After I am fairly certain that all the fab work is done and the jeep comes all the way apart for the finishing touches, I plan to POR 15 the frame. I thought about powder coating but decided against it. The frame will hopefully never see the sun so POR 15 should hold up well. As for moving of the shackle hangars, I have come to the realization that the front will need to be moved, and will probably do so when the jeep comes all the way back apart again. thanks for the tips gentleman keep them coming.

Well I got the new flaming river steering colum mounted today. I used their floor mount and their hangar mount with a little fab work to the floor and the pedal support. I think it looks pretty good and should be a huge improvement over the stock one!

With the steering colum in I was able to locate the new Psc power steering gear box and mount. I am waiting for universal for the steering shaft for final fitment before I burn the mount to the frame.

I would paint a top coat on the POR15. I went without it on my CJ5 frame and the whole front end is cloudy and looks terrible. When I painted the scrambler frame I bought chassis black and it came out great

Thanks for that! I will be sure to do that.

Well had a productive week this week. Got the GenRight corner guards in and got the right one cut for the factory flare. I also got the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder mounted and the linkage fabricated and installed.

:)

As others have mentioned.......that shackle angle may end up being to vertical or a slight negative angle. Shackles are designed to not only allow the spring to have a place to expand and retract to they also play an important part in softening the spring rate.

When the shackle is to vertical that will have a negative effect on how the spring reacts. Most times I like to see that shackle angle start with a "New spring" at about 15 degrees ( picture ) and then during the break in period proceed to settling at 30-45 degrees.

When I set up leaf springs I never weld up the fixed end of the spring hanger until most of the weight is in the vehicle......or until you can load the vehicle with some external weight (picture). This allows you to move the fixed end along the frame rail to set the shackle angle once the weight is in.

The other thing you may find out with a high arc ( longer than stock ) spring the shackle length you have may not be long enough to allow the spring to drop into full droop.

:D:D:D:D

I will be moving the hanger position after the jeep comes back apart. I do appreciate the angle you gave as I can use that as a good reference. And for shackle length I have place 6 in shackles in the front since that picture was taken.

The way I see it a 6" shackle is a bit much due to excessive sway. Some guys don't like anything longer than oem, I would say a 4" should be max.

I had the 6 in shackles in due to the location of the shackle hangar. 4 inches would not have allowed adequate movement for the spring. However that has since been changed.

I was able to get the frame all finished up and painted and I am now moving on to the final reassembly. I have the front axle rebuilt with a lock rite locker, and I'm currently waiting on my Cromo inner shafts to finish out the front axle. For those of you following from the beginning you will notice the change in shackle angle and length.

Was able to get a little more work done. All the tedious small stuff is paying off because everything is bolting together like I knew what I was doing! I am still waiting on the front right axle shaft and need to get the rear axle flanges machined down to accept the disc rotor. Once that happens I'll be rolling again.
