Hi all, I need a quick sanity check. I pulled my wheels to check for a pulsing in the brakes, expecting bad rotors (I bought the CJ in August for winter snows..). What I found was the driver's disk was loose. I pulled it apart expecting the nut to be loose, but found a cracked race and a broken bearing. The numbers on the bearings are LM102949 and LM501349. I believe I need to get the races as a separate item, but it looks like Timken SET45 and SET47 have those. I want to do the spindle bearing while I'm at it, but don't have a puller to verify the part numbers. Is Timken SBK1 what I need?

Any additional seals etc that I aren't included in these three kits that I'll need to order?

There's a lot of side to side play in the axle shaft where it comes through the spindle. Is this normal? I'm worried I'll replace all the bearings just to find out there's a problem with the spindle itself.

Thanks
Dave

upper and lower ball joints just because its 40 years old and if the other stuff is that bad the ball joints were surely neglected.

The axle shaft play is normal.
I drove the spindle bearing out with a socket on an extension, smak'n it with a block of wood. Seated it the same way.
Do you have a NAPA near you? Go there, as they will have all you need. Take the old bearings with you. ;)
Hope you have the correct spindle nut socket.

Ball joints and the axle universals would be nice, but I think that will be a spring job. I couldn't move the knuckle so I think they're good. It looks like a PO did a bad job on the bearings on this wheel, the passenger side is tight and has a different grease. I don't have the socket yet so couldn't pull it apart. The nuts on the drivers side were loose.

The socket is on the shopping list.

My problem with the local parts stores is I don't know what to tell them for model and year since most don't show the 76 CJ5 with disks up front (11.75" dia and the thick ones, 1.2"?).

Most of the counter guys give me a blank stare and say "What year?!"

Yes it's not a very fun job.I have done a few.You will want to add inner axle seals and a pinion seal along with those ball joints and axle u-joints when you redo everything. Greetings from the Northwest, mike

You should always replace the bearing and race as a unit.

That is why I said to take the old bearings with you. ;)
NAPA has a very good data base for parts.
