77 cj5 master cylinder replacment need help

i am working on replacing the brake master cylinder, and my replacement doesn't have a new pushrod and i cant remove the old one. is my new master the wrong one was my old one the wrong one. do i need a new master or should i just try to find a new push rod.

Your old push rod is likely held in place by an internal snap ring in the barrel of the old Master Cylinder. Remove the boot, unsnap the ring, it should be relatively easy.

the master cylinder is completely apart and on the bench the only possible place there could be a snap ring is under the first seal and i couldn't find it. i have tried hitting it with a hammer and prying off. i am almost to the point of cutting the piston to get it out.

Hmmmm, the snap ring should be at the back end inside the cylinder barrel. I think there's a steel washer holding the guts inside. In your case I could be wrong though.

If all else fails take it to a brake place, I bet they've seen this problem before.

...... redneck solution, but hey what can it hurt, cut the darned thing, be careful not to cut the rod and see exactly how it was done.

yeah i removed the snap ring at the back of the cylinder and all the guts poped out still not moving. i am going to take it down to the local auto parts store (these guys actually know something not just how to use a computer) today or tomorrow and ask them how to remove it and if they can get a new rod.

I always take broken stuff apart and return a box of parts.

no core. i ended up cutting it apart, and found the problem was a small rubber piece on the outside of the push rod that was fitting into a groove in the piston. not shure how it is supposed to come apart about the only other thing i could have done was hook it up between two trucks and pull. thanks for the help
