77 cj5 starter 232 engine

I was told by the auto part store that you can't bench test a jeep starter,I had bought a rebuilt and installed it but it would'nt work, Removed it and took it back to the store and they put it on there machine and it ran,so reinstalled with a new solinoid and still nothing ,just a lot of clicking.Shawn

Sounds like a bad connection. Check the terminals on the battery. And be sure the ground on the block is clean and tight. Any corrosion on the battery terminals could cause the problem also.

Also use a meter and make sure the battery voltage is good.

Why can't you bench test a jeep starter? They are no different than any other bendix-style starter...
Set it on the ground, hook up a negative ground cable of some kind (I use jumper cables) to the case, and flash the pos. lug with the other side of the cables (hooked to + side of battery of course). If it jumps around and tries to get away, its probably good...

Anyways, check the battery and connections, clean the starter mounting area really well before install, make sure the battery cable to the starter is good. Thats pretty simple and should make a bench-tested starter do its job.

One other thing to consider if nothing else works...Is your engine siezed up?

have them check the battery, the starter will not work with out full voltage. bad cell/ no starter.
Will the engine turn over if you push it in gear?? This happened to me, engine locked when setting, could not understand why good starter would not turn the engine over.:dunno:
