Hey guys, my name is Brandon and I recently purchased a 77 CJ5 that is now my daily driver. It is awesome! However when activating either turn signals my hazards come on. When activating my hazards, my hazards come on. Only only one of these is a good thing. I drive it on the street every day so I really need to fix this before I get a ticket or worse! I recently installed a painless wiring harness so all of the wiring is new. I have dual filiment bulbs in the back. Also when my headlights are on, all of my lights are on. and I believe that while my headlights are on the brake light is activated as well. So no one knows when I am braking. So what is it? Bad ground? Hazard relay? Magic? (I replaced the turn signal switch with no luck) Thanks ahead of time for any assistance!

Hmm this one is strange, if the lights are coming on then it shouldnt be a bad ground. hoow old is the dimmer switch and headlight switch?

I'm no electrical whiz, but it sounds to me like you've got something wired together that shouldn't be.

Depending on what tail lights you have, you should have 2 or 3 wires coming out of them. One for the tail light (which is the smaller element in the bulb), one for the turn signal/hazard/brake and one for backup lights if they're part of the tail light unit. On the Painless harness that I just installed, the white wire out of the harness goes to the tail light side on both sides, the green goes to the right signal/hazard/brake side, the green/black wire goes to the left signal/hazard/brake side. The black wire goes to ground on the body or frame and the tail light body itself grounds to the tub through the bolts. At least that's how mine worked and everything seems to work fine.

Don't know if that helps any, but Good Luck.

I will look at my tail light wiring again. It wasn't plug and play so there is a good chance I did something wrong there. I will try to work on it tommorow and let you know how it goes. Thanks for commenting!

i THINK MY 1980 IS THE SAME, OR VERY SIMILAR.

The front turn signals and marker lights are the round lights on the sides of the grill. They are: marker/turn and hazard. They should have dual element bulbs. THAT MIGHT BE YOUR ISSUE!

The front SIDE markers (amber lens) will also flash with turn/hazard.

If your brake lights look like they are always on, I would be looking for:

-stuck brake light switch (mine was bad).
-bad grounds.
-bad turn signal switch.
-bad flasher. THERE ARE TWO.

Monday I found myself driving around with the top and doors off because it was a beautiful 70 degree december day. When all of the sudden, and to no ones surprise, the old jeep just died on me. I pushed it into the gas station, called a tow truck and replaced the ignition control module and it fired right up. This inspired me to rededicate my day and work on those lights. After a couple hours and a box of 15 and 30 amp fuses I now have working lights all around. I had my tail lights wired incorrectly. I bought new tail lights and played the guessing game with the wires until they did what I wanted them to do. Now I have turn signals, hazards, headlights (even high beams but they are literaly high beams and quite useless) brake lights and I no longer need to worry about flashing blue and red lights in my faded and spoted rear view mirror. Thanks again guys for all of your help! Hope to see you on the trails!
