1977 CJ5 304 V8 3 speed Trans Fiberglass front end,
I was checking under the dash of my 77 CJ5 the other day and noticed a red wire that had the coating melted off, so today I followed the wire overtones the middle of the dash and it ended over near the speedometer. But wasn't hooked to anything so I traced it back to the bottom of the fuse panel and it was hooked to a terminal with a heavy yelled wire so I clipped it off.

Does someone have a wiring diagram or could possibly tell me what this wire goes to?

My temp and fuel gauges don't work is there a connection?

may not be the greatest idea to snip wire you don't know the reason for.

Jeep CJ 1976 1977 COLOR Wiring Diagram 11 x 17 | eBay

get one of these, color coded and laminated and twice the size of the factory service manual. I have heard of guys with the intellect of a chimp, becoming CJ wiring gurus almost over night.:D

Did you put a meter on this wire to see if it was hot??

Generally a red wire is a hot line, so I would check the fuse box to see if a fuse is blown and if so, what circut it is from. Then that wire should be protected with electrical tape at least. It is always great to have a wiring diagram around. Looking at my later Jeep wiring diagram I see the temp and fuel gauge is power thru the ign lps fuse which also powers the electric oil pressure gauge and 4wd light.

IOPort51 In most cases I would agree, but the wire had no coating on it and it wasn't hooked to anything on the end, So I thought it might be safer to do this then let it short out and possibly start a fire or something, (I'm not saying this to be smart or anything like that)

I think the fuse did say cluster so I will check into a wiring diagram and go from there Thanks

I think I am the one being a smartalic, I apologize, I seem to have you confused with some one else.

You did just what I would have done, is the fuse blown?? Is it actually connected to a fuse?? Melted wire insulation takes a bit of amperage, seems like something that could not happen on a fused circuit or one with the right size fuse. Would you like to guess what size wire it was??

seriously:
That laminated schematic is one of the best $20 I have spent on service literature, and I have a pretty good library. It is so much easier to follow being color coded with the right wire color and it is big enough to see. You can sweat on it, get it covered with grease, leave it out in the rain, it does not care.
