I have a 77 CJ7 and it shifts good if you get it just right going into 3rd but if you miss it just a hair it grinds. It the T-18 I belive with the granny 1st. I just purchased this jeep mabee I'm not used to driving it yet. I have a 81 CJ5 and it never grinds. Just wondering if I have issues with the tranny. Thanks for any input!

Curious If you double clutch, does it work or still grind?
The T-150 in my wife's Jeep has done this for the past couple years, but basically if you press the clutch in, then out, then back in, it will slide right in.... hers needs synchros, but she drives it so infrequently, I can't justify yanking and rebuilding it right now.

I will do it when I do the RMS in the engine... again, cant' justify it when it only leaks a tiny bit.

:)With all other things being OK..........it sounds like the 3rd gear synchro.
Hows the shifter? if its real loose or you have a bad fork sometimes that also could be a problem.
Easy to pull the top cover and take a look............The shifter on early models is different than later ones so get up to speed on what you have.
To change the synchro. the tranny needs to come out and almost completely come apart.

BINGO!

I'm afraid you need to either rebuild or replace your Transmission .
If it's not too bad yet you can wait and put off the rebuild. Your Transmission is just getting old.
