1980 cj5 258ci straight 6, 31x10.50's. Partial Teamrush iginition upgrade, MC 2150 Carb. 4.0 head swap, factory header. I call him "Eugene".

Dad's jeep when he raced in the 70's. Cj2 running gear, ford 300 cu in 6 cyl with 3 deuces. Fiberglass model T body and hand laid fiberglass hood. welded 5.38 gears and beer keg fuel tank. see avatar

So I have a ignition ques. I have an 80 CJ5 with AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . Does it hace an ECM or just the motorcraft ignition module? I hate the mess of wire running to and from the dist. I have even considered instaling a points dist upgraded to a pointless module to reduce it to one wire. That idea also has appeal for me as I can keep a spareset of points for back ups. I like simplicity.
 
Post a pick of the left and right side of the engine so we can see how it's set up.
 
If your dissy as points I don't think you have a ECM. If it does it will have O2 sensor.
 
it doesn't have points. it has the brain box on the wheel well. where would the ecm be located and what year did it start? i don't see a o2 sensor
 
Shouldn't have an ECM.

Only electronic ignition.

Do yourself a favor, get a one wire DUI. :D

I presume you are referring to my avatar pic?That's dad's racing jeep from the 70's.
 
Yours wont have the "computer". That didnt come about untill '83 and it would be located behind the dash right around the glove compartment.
 
Thanks petescj. That'll cross nutter bypass off my list. I thinking maybe using some of teamrush's upgrades too. Since it technically dad's jeep (says it's ours), GM parts are most likely out, he doesn't care for them.

I have read the teamrush write up. although the msd box maybe a little out of the budget right now. So maybe cap wires and coil right now. Plugs are new, so regap plugs is free.
