Yes, the HEI coil needs voltage, I will always run power off the alternator direct. In fact when we set up drag cars we run a switch on the throttle plate to jump two batteries at full throttle, so we run the coil and fuel pump at 24 volts. I would love to say I came up with that but its and old Dr. Chris Jacobs trick.
