Hi,
I am looking to replace my old 83 CJ7 (AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ) front pipe. Currently the air nipple is crimped closed as I no longer have the cat on (off road only).

My question is, is there an option for the front pipe without the air tube nipple? It looks like my current pipe is Walker 44872. Looking at Rock Auto, a 78 CJ7 with the same 4.2L engine has a different pipe 45561, which does not have this air tube nipple. Does anyone know if this is overall the same pipe, jsut without the nipple? Are there other options of pipes available, other than buying the 44872, and then welding the nipple closed?

Thanks

You have to be careful depending on if you have an automatic Transmission or not. Automatics can be a bit finicky. I bought a new one with the nipple and just hammered it shut on a Hollywood block. Never had an issue with it.

I have the T-5 manual Transmission . I was hoping to get a cleaner and leak proof seal if possible, but if they wont mate up properly then.... I guess I'll have to go with hammering away at the nipple...

I was just checking NAPA's website, it states that the 44872 head pipe for an '83 CJ7 is 35" long, and that 45661 for a '78 CJ7 is 56" long. This is because the '78 doesn't have a catalytic converter. If you're not running a cat, you could use the 45661, but if you are running a cat, you could use the 44872 and weld up or pinch off the air nipple, like petescj stated. You could also take it to an exhaust shop and have them cut off and weld the air nipple off, or you could have a custom exhaust shop bend you up a custom head pipe for probably close to the same price.

Elwood,

Are you aware of the 45661 ('78 pipe) will mate up to the 83 manifold? Is a donut gasket needed? I'm not too concerned about the length as I can always cut that back. As I am not running a cat, this may be the best option as I would not have to worry about sealing the nipple.

Thanks

You shouldn't need the donut gasket. The '81 and newer exhaust manifolds had the donut shape molded into the manifold. The '80 and older ones did not, that's why you needed the aspestos donut.

IMHO, if you're not running a cat, the '78 head pipe should work just fine for you. :chug:

Elwood,

Looking at Napa's site I see that the 78 has a 2 1/2" I.D. Flare, and the 83 has a 2 Bolt Loose Flange. To me, this sounds like two different dimensions. Perhaps I can have them order the pipes and compare the two side by side.

I see what you're talking about. I ordered that exact head pipe (45661) several years ago for my CJ. I had to reuse my loose 2 bolt flange from my old exhaust system. The 2 1/2" I.D. flange mated directly to my exhaust manifold.

I can not speak intelligently to the other head pipe (44872). You may have to do what you said and have them order both so you can compare.

put a set of headers on it

Do you want both I can leave them bolted together and sent you all of it? I was getting ready to go out there I will snap a pic and post it for you before I take it off.

Shoot me a picture. ... After 1980 they changed the setup so the only way I'd be able to is if I did both I think... How much do you think to shop both?
