Build Thread 83CJ7 rebuild "sort of"
This is the seat I built for the back, the seats are out of a Subaru Brat, had to lose the middle handles. I made this several years ago and plan on re-using it. Everybody that sees it seems to love it. :D
Wow what a blast from the past. I put those seats in the back of my Luv 4x4 truck. It was my first 4x4 and my kids loved riding in the back in those seats.

So what kind of bolts are you using to go through those rear tub mounts that are in the rear floor? I think Jeep was using carriage bolts at one time and are a pain to get off. I've got mine all apart right now and I'm thinking of using some button head stainless allen bolts as replacements?

I am replacing everything important like mounts and seat belts with grade 8 hex head. and reinforcing with a square 3/16 plate.

haha yeah my daughter is seven and loves them, she likes the handles, I am gonna try to pad them and hopefully find a cover that will fit. they are a tad rough on the buttocks.

just a couple of pics from todays festivities!!!

did a little more metal work, def be glad when it is all finished up. Lot more to replace than I realized. Have two body mounts to repair on drivers side that will complete the body mounts. lot of tack welding left to do on the driver side floor pan, still need to make the rear floor pan and repair the fender wells. then on to more exciting things..

few more pics. boring I know.:)

Be sure and use a good metal etching primer on all that bare metal.

yeah I have been wondering about that. What is a good brand, and where is a good place to purchase it..

I go to auto paint store. And use either PPG or sherman Williams.

took a break from the CJ. Back at it now, gonna throw up a few more pics. worked on the rear floor and driver side fender well. cut the last of my patches from a few years back off the passenger side fender well. needless to say I had forgotten how bad that side really was as you can from the pics there is not much left. Now I can rebuild it or buy the cheap replacement panel so that is where I am at now. once I deal with that I have to finish tacking in all the panels (probably need a couple rolls of wire for that) and grind the welds smooth. put in some body caulk in a few places. All in all I am satisfied the way it is coming together considering I have pretty much rebuilt the whole floor of the tub.

couple more pics: :chug:

Wow I'm amazed at the amount of rust. Thats a tough project and a lot of work , you should be proud of the job your doing. I hope you have plans to undercoat that body and chassis and get a good sealer / paint or Rhino line the top side also.
Out here in California we just do not see that much damage. My 65 CJ has no noticible rust anywhere, but whats interesting and I'm not sure if this was done at the factory but the chassis and frame was all shot with undercoating.
Good Luck

Thanks Tarry99

I am def gonna herculine the inside and gonna to try and prime the bare metal underside and spray some sort of bedliner on it. It was a lot worse than I thought or remembered once I got into it. I tacked all the patches in place probably 6 yrs ago.

Some of that rattle can undercoat works wonders if nothing else. Make sure the area is dry and clean.

thanks, thats what I had inside back when I did all the patches, but I didnt know about the etching primer so it never stuck so I am gonna prime and probably use the rattle can underneath and the good stuff inside.

Did a little more tonight, went ahead and repaired the fenderwell, test fit my sport bar, and rear seat (daughter and friend helped me adjust) drilled holes for bolts. had to replace the mounts on the sport bar. all of the panels are tacked in, just have to spend the time to finish all the welds and grind it all down. whew not looking forward to that...
