My CJ7 is a AMC 304 V8 and it has enough wires dangling around under the hood and dash to run a space shuttle. Are there any books, diagrams, or schematics to show what is needed? I bought a Haynes for it and it don't tell me what I want to know. I want to take everything out except what wires are needed to run the lights, honk the horn and run the wipers. I don't want any computer stuff left. Is it possible?

Thanks for the welcome. I looked through the downloads and can not find a wiring schematic for a 8 cylinder jeep. I did find the 4 and 6 cylinder. Is the 8 the same as one of the others?

The reason you can't find a diagram is because ASFAIK only the I4 and the I6 were availabale in 84 (last year was 81 for the v8). Was your 8 swapped in?

Here is a underhood wiring diagram for my '86, it should help. I would suggest printing it out for better visibility:
If you want the rest of the '86 layout, they are in my gallery.

CJ, I just looked up the VIN number and you are right, it is suppose to have a I6 in it. I guess that explains why the wiring looks like it does. It reminds me of a bowl of spegetti, you can't tell where it begins or ends. I guess I'll just try to figure something out.:(

Since it came with an I6 just use the FSM that I linked you to for the wiring and follow the diagram for the I6. It should atleast get you to where the splices were made.

Update---the jeep is starting and running with no computer and only 8 to 10 wires under the hood. This was possible because someone had changed the engine/carburetor and distributor. I was able to find a Ford starting and charging diagram and wired it using it. I removed all the wires going to the computer.
