Bone stock for now
Hello all, this is my first attempt at redoing a Jeep, as well as writing a summary of it. So please, bear with me. I bought this Jeep in 2004 while living in Hawaii. She has been my daily driver(for the most part) since then. She is basically stock and for the most part I intend to keep her that way. A few weeks ago a bolt broke in the clutch linkage, and after breaking two ez-outs in the broken bolt I realized that instead of pulling the Transmission to fix it I might as well fix her up. I'm sure I will have many questions along the way, and from what I have seen on here, this is the place questions get answered. Please tell me when I am doing something stupid. I won't be offended.

I thought I loaded these pics in the last post, but I guess I didn't do it right so here the "official" before pics.

Welcome from Colorado and nice...that is what my 85 used to look like...good luck with the restro and keep us up to date with pics as you move along.

A broken bolt leading to a restoration... kinda funny! :) Take lots of pics and bag and label everything. You'll have a shop spread with parts before you know it! Keep us posted.

Guys will use any old excuse to restore a Jeep. Welcome aboard!

Thats a pretty nice example of a stock Cj you have there. We'll let you know if your doing something "stupid" as long as you return the favor. Plenty of friendly people here willing to give good advice. Enjoy your broken bolt rebuild. :D

Getting close to having the tub off. I haven't got to work on it much lately, but hopefully I will in the next few days.

have fun with that one... it took me about a whole afternoon to get mine off, and half the body mount bolts were rusted through.:eek:

I finally got to work on the jeep again this weekend. I got the tub off and the dash and wiring removed. I learned some valuable lessons this weekend, here is the short list.

1. Dogs and leverage are mans best friends.
2. I should have washed UNDER the Jeep before I started this project.
3. Rachet extensions are worth every penny.
4. It is much easier to remove the tub when you remove all 10 body mount bolts instead of just the 8 on the outside of the frame.
5. Last but not least, when your wife says you have to watch the kids while she gets her hair did, that is 4 hours you don't get to work on the jeep on a Saturday afternoon (long story I won't go into).

Are they old enough to wrench yet?

My boys aren't quite old enough to wrench just yet. But I hope it won't be too much longer. It was a pretty productive weekend with the Jeep. Aside from spending about three hours moving things in and out of the shop. I really need to talk my wife into building a bigger shop! If anybody has any tips on that one please let me know what the trick is. Anyway, I got the engine pulled and partially taken apart for rebuild. The insides didn't look as bad as I thought they would. A lot of carbon build up, but for 230,000 miles I'd call it pretty good. I hope to finish the disassembly and get it to the machine shop this week.

I gave up trying to upload pictures with my phone last night. Here are some pics of this weekends progress.

Here is the broken bolt that got me in to this mess. I also got the engine tore down and ready to go to the machine shop tomorrow.:chug: The Transmission and exhaust are off of the frame. All that is left on the frame is the gas tank and lines, brake lines, and power steering assembly. It looks like my timing chain has been rubbing a little bit. Should I replace the cover as well as the chain? Or just the chain? I've actually gotten tired of saying "well, since I'm this far I might as well do...". It's all good fun though. I'm getting excited to start putting this baby back together.

i like how you have everything on the wall for putting back together

Haha! Yes that is a sideways pic. But I like the idea of mounting stuff on the wall. I seem to have a lot more wall space than I do table top space. Anyway, I got the engine off to the machine shop today. They said 1 1/2 to 2 weeks before it is done. At first I was bummed about it taking so long, but then I remembered how much work I need to get done before it comes back and was okay with it.
