I have an 85 CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l straight six just put a new fuel pump as well as fuel filter but can not get gas from the tank to the pump? i sucked on the fuel line and heard gas going back into the tank as i took my mouth of the line... what could be going wrong?

Remove the gas cap and siphon fuel up to the end of the hose, this should remove most of the air out of the system. Btw, gas tastes terrible.

Hmm. Why did you change the pump? And totally off topic an np203 Transfer Case ??? Also it should go back to the tank after you stop sucking on it. When you say it won't pump sometimes it takes a few forevers to get to the carb. Ive had to run them on a spray bottle full of gas until they would live on their own..

Make sure you didn't hook up the return line to the pump and the primary line to the filter. I only mention it because I made that mistake once. It didn't start.

I'm sorry I may have misunderstood.. When you said can't get gas from the tank to the pump I assumed you ment the pump wouldn't pull it in and then send it to the carb. Is that what you ment? Or did you mean when you suck it up to the end of the hose it goes back to the tank when you stop? Because if that's the case nothing will stop that unless gravity fails!

Actually, this probably doesn't apply to you. My CJ5 originally had a GM 2.5 which had the carb on the passenger side and the fuel return line right next to the primary line. If yours was a factory AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l this would be hard to do because the primary and return line are on opposite frame rails.

Ck the connections on the fuel line. Sounds like your pull'n air more than fuel.
Also look for a pinched line.

I guess I still don't understand the problem?? When you stop sucking on the fuel line the gas will return to the tank. Does he mean his pump will not pull the fuel to itself?

the guy i bought it from told me it had a np203 Transfer Case but its a Dana 300 when i crawled under it to look at it and yes my pump wouldnt pull gas to the carb so we get syfening gas to try and remove all the air and now it fires righ up thanks for the help!! gas taste horrible:D

I always keep a windex bottle full of gas . They always run on their eventually.
