Hi All --

I've got a York 210 in my Scrambler which has a 401 in it out of a late 70s Wagoneer. It recently went up (making horrible internal sound and bogging down the engine pretty horribly). Wasn't the clutch bearings, it was definitely internal. So I went to the local junkyard and pulled another out of a Waggy, it had compression, clutch worked, etc. Got it all bolted up, filled with POE oil (what I believe is the correct amount, around 10oz), and it's making this annoying pinging sound internally. Nothing like the old compressor but still annoying. Swapped the clutch and pulley off my old unit just to be sure, same results.

Now before I go and get another one (and this time maybe splurge for a rebuilt) one, anything I could maybe be missing? It isn't currently charged with freon, just oil, not sure if that could have anything to do with it but I don't believe so. I know lots of people use these for OBA with no freon.

Final question: There are gobs of fords in local yards but not much AMC. I know the Ford pulley won't line up with AMC setups, but is it just a matter of swapping the pulley and clutch or is the crankshaft actually different? I've searched for hours on the web with not much in the way of results.

Thanks a bunch.

I would think that once you found a clutch that would work, it could be adjusted to fit. I am assuming you are working with conventional fan belts and not a serpentine type. it can be adjusted fore and aft possibly with the use of some type of shim such as a flat washer or you might have to do some metalworking. Then get the right size of belt. Thats pretty much how I did mine, and I do have to use an odd size serpentine belt.

Any of the 210 series compressors should work. As far as info try to goggle OBA .There is a lot of info about the ? you ask.Is it possible that the noise you hear is because there is no resistance on the compressor pistons and they are just floating.I bet if you charge the system the noise will be gone.Your clutch should work on any 210 york. Not trying to be a answer man just some stuff I have learned while building my OBA system.
