Has anybody tried subscribing to the ALLDATADiy website for repair information about their CJ? Is their information any better...or worse...than the typical Haynes/Chilton style manuals?

I need instructions that even a meathead like me can follow!

Thats a new one on me, I guess i"ll have to check it out.
The best info is the FSM.

Alldata is ok, but I prefer to have the book in front of me so the F.S.M. or Chiltons is the way to go for me.

B.t.w.- I grew up in Rockville M.D.- wherebouts ya from?

What kind of instructions do you need?

I havent (that I am aware of) asked for anything like that, but I have seen the guys here pull charts and diagrams from the sky.

So, in my opinion, I would have to say, start here. Ask. Get info, as much as you need. Then if its not enough....well, I dont know then. :)

I've never tried thier DIY website, but I do drop $120. a month in my ALLDATA and sercive center subcription. If there is half as much info in DIY it would deffinetly be the way to go.

Now that's a dangerous thing to say because I have A LOT of questions!! :)

I am just getting started on this '86 Jeep project. Since I have no idea what the PO did in terms of maintenance, I want to get the basic stuff out of the way. The first thing I really need help with is repacking the front hubs. Since I have never done that before, I was looking for a manual with a lot of instructions and pictures!

The best thing you can and should purchase is a FSM (Factory Shop Manual). Other then that we can help you with whatever you need.

The problem with replacing the front hubs is that depending on what type you have, instructions differ.

So, what type are your front hubs? Pictures help... :)

Thanks CJ. I will take a couple pictures in the morning (in the daylight) to help identify the hubs.

Where's the best place to get a FSM?

One of the big issues I have with the aftermarket manuals is that they are so general. For example, the Chilton model covers everything from 1971-1986! That's one of the reasons I was asking about AllData since they at least ask for a single model year...but I don't know if the repair information they provide is actually that specific.

Thanks! I will keep on the look out for a FSM. Are the reprints available OK, or do I really need to find an original?

Reprints are just fine. It's like getting the second copy of any book.

XJ287 -- Does ALLDATA have information for each model year (even the old ones), or is it more like the Haynes manuals which provide general repair information not specific to one model year?

I personally prefer the FSM on CD, so I print out the instructions, and get em greasy without worry.

What about "The Jeep Bible" by the Desert Fox & Super Dog.

It actually has some good info.
I have a copy that's older that some of your Jeeps.

ALLDATA is vehicle specific......you select the year, make model and engine....then it's broken down by trany and diff. types. the info in the profetional (paid subcription) version is all dealer level, you see every thing that the OEM dealer can see, including recalls and service bulitins, all of which is up dated on a daily basis.....which is why we dump as much money as we do to provide service info to both of my shops.

Currently, ALLDATA is only going back as far as '82, and the 2011 info will be added in a few weeks. But for the most part, unless your looking for info on an f-head, or some screw ball '40's carberater....'82 is as far back as you need to go anyway.

Thanks! It sounds like it could be an option...at least until I can get a FSM. Hopefully, the DIY version of ALLDATA is something close to what the pros can get, even if Limited to only one vehicle per subscription.

Keep looking on eBay. Sooner or later a factory manual or CD will show up. PM anyone that is selling CD manuals and ask them if they have your model.

I got an original 73 CJ manual for $30 used. My 98 mountaineer factory manual was $35, but is over 8" in 2 volumes. Now what exactly do you want to test? It's in there!

Chiltons/ Haynes is good for spark plug gap and lite stuff, but their favorite line is "take it to a dealer". Pictures they use are always of the wrong year. Duh that is why I bought this stupid manual in the first place.
