Do Alternators dislike water? :D I know it shouldn't seem like an alternator being electrical piece of equipment would like water, but I'm sure they should be somewhat resilient?

I submerged the passenger side of the jeep while running, and now my brand new alternator is not charging again...

Once the tail pipes were back above water, i did try to re-start while alternator was still submerged, but there were other problems (see below)

So I'm wondering if I should be looking for a better "water-proof alternator, and/or making mounting brackets to raise it from lower passenger side of engine to higher passenger side of engine.

What does everyone else do? Stay out of deep water

This is the submerged pic...

I did fry my ignition streetfire box too, already tried disassembling and cleaning with electronics cleaner, power to it, but none out of it, so handled that already, but now no charge from alternator...

First I would think you should try and return it for another alternator, since you have no idea what happened to it, right. There might be a marine or boat alternator that could work for your application. The minerials in water do tend to conduct electricity. On my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l I have to be careful of that since the alt. sits down kinda low.

It looks like you are having way to much fun. :D

JR,

Do Alternators dislike water? :rolleyes:The answer depends on how much!

submersed:eek:.......... Yes, along with anything thing else that is electrical.

How about you engine , front & rear end ,Transfer Case & Transmission ? I would bet that you also got some water in there.............did you put that on You-Tube or funniest home videos?

Man what a wimppie jeep ya got there, can't take a little water.:D

oh no that's not the alternator , alternators do fine under water its the current of the water flowing AC/ and your jeep flowing DC/ , happens all the time , you just need to get god to change the current in the water , so it matches , just say a little prayer he"listen,,get that thing back up on dry land and the DC/ will flow just fine after it drys out in a few years , or you can throw a couple triple AAA's in there to compensate for the current and it will neutralize everything , you will be fine , also you can add a key on the end of a kite and Ben Franklin will run around it in a circle and ground it all out for you so you can keep going , no big deal you act like you haven't done this before ,

Yes I'll need to be replacing a lot of fluids  It's been drying a few days now, so hopefully the alternator will magically start working again... lol ;)

I only have the video of being pulled out, But I DO have some videos of earlier in the day climbing a nice rock / step pyramid... :D

I know right?? I ran through it 5 times in multiple directions (letting out some aggression from my broken valve stem forcing me to change one of my new tires... And now needing a new rim:

:D:D OOps! Guess I did need the flexible valve stems!

This was last run through before going home... Went across the wrong way and got stuck in some rutts... I was moving it back and forth just fine and almost got out, then... it died... lol

_______________

So I plan to check it out again, and see if I can save it. But after cleaning, testing, and having tested at the parts house if still not working, I may buy a new one... AGAIN...

AMP light in gauge is not lighting up, so it's possible I suppose, there's a wire burnt out / loose in connection somewhere...

More  and multi-meter time on my close future!

Sounds like a good idea.
Either that or stay out of the deep water.:D but what fun would that be.
