I am looking for an aluminum valve cover for my 78 CJ5 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . I'm finding plenty that will fit the 81 - 86 CJ but nothing for mine. The online instructions explain that the covers for the 81 - 86 are for those engines only.

Does anyone know if there is an after market valve cover source for a 1978 or am I just out of luck?

I never found one either for mine. I ended up with a chrome valve cover. My ex wifes 84 CJ7 had that nice aluminum model. I know that model motor had the center bolts and mine had the bolts on the edges.

How did the chrome cover work out for you? I've seen those online but wasn't so sure about them.

I bought it because it was alot cheeper than a stock piece but it served me fine until I sold the motor which was about 12 years later. Just make sure it has that vent assembly inside the cover where the breather mounts to because if the hole is wide open you will be blowing oil out of that all the time.

I had one of the aluminum valve covers on my '78. Could never get it to seal up right, no matter what I tried;

Clifford Performance is the only place I've found that has aluminum valve covers for the 1972-80 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l /AMC 232 i6 /199, just be warned they're awefully freaking expensive.

Clifford Performance: 47-4050 Aluminum Valve Cover 1972-80 w/ 199/232/258 cid.

Wow! No joke on the price!

Yes, Clifford does still make them.

I ended up buying one a few months ago and love it! The gasket required some trimming to fit right but other than that it's been great.

For the money and choices, it's worth it!

Not a big fan of aluminum valve covers. Not sure if the heat warps them or what but they always seem to leak in time. Hotjeepparts.com has a good variety. Spend the extra $ and I think you will be happy.
