Another 5 gallons please....

My gas gauge has proved to be less than reliable, so until I get completely accustomed to the CJ I'd like to carry an extra 5 gal. of fuel. I don't want to carry it in the bed of the jeep. While looking I noticed a 5 gal. can that has a hole in the middle that indexes on an added device in the center of the spare tire. Is this a good method of carry or is it to cool to be true.

I'm not sue how to carry the extra fuel I'd like to have along. Not just for the near future but on future trips afield. Normal gas cans apear that they will over lap the tail lights. If the tire is back spaced to the rear then the mount will be under considerably increased stress. At this point there doesn't seem to be a real clean way to carry extra gas in my CJ. That is asside from the old traditional strap 'em on the side in various locations methods. I suppose that could be done though.

WOW I'd never heard of these - I'm gonna get the 4 gallon I think for my Jeep. The dimensions make it appear it would fit right between the fender wells in the rear, then with a siphon pump I can refill without even moving the can.

With dimensions of 34 1/2 L x 13 1/4 W x 3H, wouldn't it fit right in the back on/against the tailgate?

If I remember right, it's 36" between the wells, so that would leave 3/4" on either side...

Let me know what you find, this and a $4 siphon kit might be a winner...

I know that mine is 36" between, it's the depth and available space I'm thinking about.

Yeah, thats kinda what I was saying, Odd sizes. Theydon't sell anything in a 5 gallon size. The other probably has some metric equivalent.

But Hedgehog remember you can stack these with the longer latch mounts. You are regulated to 2/4/8 etc. but I'd think 4 is enough if you're "out" and stuck. That's over a quarter tank for us 15gal folks and exactly a quarter for the 20gal crowd.

I can go to wally world and get 8 5gal. cans for that much.

They are nice , pricey but nice. I lived in AZ. a few years back though and can tell you Id pay for those easily before running out of gas in 115* heat. Id grab another for water just in case.

And while your at Wally world you can probably get a bungee cord long enough to mount them all to your roll bar. Make sure its one of the good "Made in China" ones though.

Well I don't know who gets one first but for me there's no more efficient way to store 4 gallons than just losing 3" of bed space. I'll post a pic on my build thread when it's in.

Lmao, I almost got tears on that one. I was thinking milk jugs upside down with water hose duct taped and stuck i. the filler neck. A cheap ball valve and 2 hose clamps and you saved $90.00 for that power brake upgrade or some Colorado goodies… .I did look up the brand olddog mentioned. Looks similar except the price tag. I was wanting a reason NOT to slide my rear seat back for more passenger legroom. Perfect!

But! If I use 3" from my CJ5 's bed I'd be losing 6.25% of the available storage capacity.

They have a center of the spare tire adaptor that can hold a can or two. But man the adaptor itself is well over $100. The idea of the lockable turn snap thing in the center of the tire and holding the can all nice and safe is apealing.

When Katrina hit NOLA I was working in Stillwater OK. Thinking about the hurricane hitting the gulf, I stopped in Walmart and got some gas cans and filled them up, just in case there were shortages or a spike in price.

I got 6 cans (5 gal blitz) for $5 each.

Now the dang cans are $15 each, and have all this CARB/ Eco-nazi on them that causes half the gas to go on the ground when you use them.

I drilled holes in all my tanks and added vents, and cut all that carb off the spouts so they are actually usable. Sad that we pay $15 for a cheap plastic can and then have to spend time to make them usable.

In the meantime, Blitz (which FYI, were made in a small town down around the OK/TX border) went out of business because of people suing them after pouring gas on an open flame, and getting burned while doing so.

I fear for what this country will look like in another 10 years.

wm69, I agree, the new gas cans suck, I hope I can make the old ones I have last a few more years.
And why is it that the stupid people always win in court, and the rest of us end up with the "new and improved" version that doesn't work.
