Another Fuel Problem

I have a 1980 Jeep CJ7 with a AMC 304 and I have replaced the fuel tank sending unit to get my gauge to work...so now I fill my tank up and gauge goes to full and I drive and it goes to empty and I run out of gas....but I go to fill it up and it only takes seven gallons of fuel and I have a 15 gal tank.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why it wont pick up the fuel.
My jeep is stock.

Did you put the strainer on the end of the pick up tube??

I don't know it has been awhile since I installed it. I have just been living with the problem and now have decided to address it
I got it from Napa.

I think your pickup tube is too short.
