Hello all,

Does anyone have first hand knowledge of what header can fit a CJ7 , V8 with a 904 auto?

There is a ton of stuff packed into the driver side area between the frame and Transmission . I have relocated the fuel and brake lines and I am considering a cable shift so i can eliminate the rod linkage.

I spoke to headman tech and the man only knew, "it will not fit". So my question is;
Is it the Transmission pan, Transmission linkage, or Transmission cooling lines that are the problem? I am making new cooing lines anyway so i can navigate around the exhaust for them.

Does anyone have the v8 auto, header combo? and if you do can you give the part number to the header you used? Pictures of the install or issue would be great.

My AMC 304 can run the stock manifold but the new 360 is going to need more flow.

I wheel in the rocks so fenderwells have been ruled out.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

You would get better low end torque with the stock manifolds. Headers are a pain in the best of circumstances, additional heat, bolts that constantly need tightening, exhaust leaks and headers are scary close to the starter.

I have to agree with that, have seen some short headers but not sure if even they would be worth it.

the only short headers i have seen are the edel shorty headers they are quite pricey but they seem to take up as much space as the stock manifolds.

Why would the 360 not be able to breathe well with the AMC 304 manifolds, I beleive they are the same exhaust manifolds for AMC 304 /401/360 Honestly since the exhaust is already ran for your cj I would reuse what you have and save the headache.

My cj had no exhaust ran and the 360 came with headman headers on it. they are rather large and extend to the cross member There is very little clearance for the manual shift linkage but it does fit. I would think an auto linkage would take up less space so you may be able to squeeze it in like on mine

I pretty much agree with all the comments posted. I removed the headers from my last cj because they were a pain but i thought maybe it was just because they were cheep ones. I built an 10.8:1 360 for that jeep but ran a 114 lobe separation so the motor never really wound past 5000. I gave that jeep to my friend when I moved and he has since tweeked it some more. His latest coment was the increase in power after adding fenderwell headers. We have considered trying a new cam with a .050 AMC 232 i6 int./242 exh. duration. still has 112 for the lobes. bla bla bla,

Anyway, he is on the east coast so he likes the tire speed. I am in the desert and need the low end but I can help feeling the need to beat my old jeep on the street.

Looks like i will port and polish my stock manifolds. and forget about the headers.

Thanks,
Chris
