1982 CJ7, 360, T15, Dana 20, AMC 20, Dana 30
Installing replacement (used) gears and diff in a Dana 44 . The previous gear set had been tampered with so I'm not convinced they were even a matched set at this point. I've read it's better to read the coast side of used gears, and that side looks a lot worse than the drive side right now.

Here's where I've landed after taking wide swings at it, and it's the best I've seen yet but pretty certain it's not quite acceptable yet.

Backlash is .009"

Need to set the pattern on the drive side. That's the side that will see the most load.
You have way to much 'toe' contact on the coast side.
Bring the BL down about .002.
Do a pattern ck in more that 1 spot-Make sure the bearings and pinion nut are torqued to speck.
FWIW: I never do a set up with a crush sleeve.......

I believe .002" backlash would be too tight. They need room for heat expansion. Spec for new gears is .006-.010" with most used sets checking in the .011-.012" range. This Dana 44 uses shims, so no worries with a crush sleeve.

I've done two gear swaps before with success but they were years apart so I'm definitely no proficient at it yet lol
 
Take the BL down .002 from where you are.
Are these new bearings?
I never set BL on new gears and bearings past the mid point.
After looking at your drive side pattern on a bigger screen.
That don't look bad--:notworthy:
Is this a front or rear axle?
Was everything torqued in place?
How much run-out do you have on the ring gear?

Ah that makes much more sense! Pinion was not torqued to spec yet, just enough to take out the slack but just before binding the bearings. Bearings are setup bearings I used for the last Dana 44 I built about 15 years ago. This is a rear Wagoneer 44. After thinking about it there's really no sense in using a setup bearing under the pinion head so I'm going to swap that for the new one next time I work on it. I hadn't even thought of ring gear runout, I'll check that too. Thanks!
 
Be sure to oil all the bearings.
Pattern test in at least 2 places.

I think you are a shade deep on the pinion gear meaning the contact point it a touch toward the inside of the ring gear. I would pull a shim out from under the pinion gear then add to the ring gear a bit to bring it closer to the pinion. This should raise the contact point but still keep it deep enough.

Did you set the carrier pre-load when you took the reading?
