Anyone know how to get better Mileage

Go to a same size CFM 4 barrel as you two barrel. The two mains will be about half the CFM and if you keep you foot out of it then the mileage will be a little better but you will still have the power on tap if needed.

Of course with the money you spend on the carb the pay back on the fuel savings will be about 20 years. it is MHO the only way to improve the mileage on a jeep is to tow it with something else that gets better mileage.

This is about as encouraging as a heart attack.

lower gears in the rear end 3.17 ect and keep it in 2 high :D

you can't be running tires that look like you stole them off your uncles tractor.:D

Looking to get better mileage on an OEM AMC 304 2bl carb..

Any ideas on this ??

Thanks,
Ed

Push it out of an airplane at 25000 Ft.
It will get GREAT mileage for the first 24999 Ft!

Hey you didn't say you wanted reliability, just mileage! :chug:

nobody suggested tbi yet? that will get you better mpgs

^^^ I agree, plus with 35" tires and 4:10 gears you might be lugging the engine, 4:88 might be better.
But really its hard to get good milage out of a brick. What kind of mpg's are you getting now?

I'd recommend a good tune up first, some quality plugs like those diamond fire,
change your fluids, check your air pressure. Search out the fuel additive thread on here.
The TBI swap would be good and your reliability goes up.

Other than that anything else added is kind of a waste unless your changing it for
another reason.

First, we need to TUNE in your gear ratio to tire size
we want to get this correct
what was your factory rpm while running at 60 MPH on stock tires?
I hope you still have the factory Transmission or this takes a few more steps.
ok now what size tires are you running now
use this chart to see what gearing you need
4Lo.com :: Gear Ratio & Tire Size Chart
now this is the correct gearing for you, do not go by his color coding unless his target rpm is yours, all engines have a target rpm, yours is the factory rpm at 60 MPH.
next we need to replace that carburetor for a closed loop fuel injection system. Carbs are inefficient, really really inefficient, they never were made for good gas mileage just for good power ration and not to burn pistons, so we need a CLOSED LOOP fuel injection system to work with, Why closed loop? so that the computer is monitoring the exhaust and corrects the amount of gas going in, you can tune a system like this for optimum gas mileage.
this is going cost you between 2 and 5 grand depending on the system and gears you go with. But it is a honest answer.

I guess with a little manipulation you could calculate the most efficient gear to tire combo for 4 low as well??
I think this is a very good answer and a very good place to start and it will give you better mileage. The issue is, if the cost of driving a "low fuel mileage" vehicle is a concern and it will cost 5K to gain "better" mileage, how much fuel could you have bought for the 5K?
I want better fuel efficiency because I want to be able to travel farther on the Limited amount of fuel I can carry. Having a range that gets you half way across the desert is a bit of a problem.
If the operating cost of the CJ is a problem a Geo Metro would be a great daily driver.

you can yune for what ever you want, but if you want great mph, that is not at 4 low:chug:
i figured a good answer without telling him to chunk the 35s for a set of 27s was what he wanted.
I do not run my Cjs for mileage, I have a DD for that

I am totaly agreeing with you , in a sort of under handed way.:chug:

depending on abilities for a couple of grand you could convert it to electric then you would have more power and would only be burning gas when your 300 mile range had expired to charge the batteries from a genorator this is a good system espically in this day and age were converting lots of vehicles in england as the price of gas there is around $3.50 a litre and 4.64 litres is a gallon the gas price in Canada is 1.00 a litre here and you get your gas from our oil sands lol in the arabias their paying 22c a gallon cause they dont pay world prices go figure

It's not a Daily Driver...Just wondering if there were any Good ideas on how to increase the mileage. It is painful to fill my 20 gallon tank when Fuel is close to $4 a gallon.

theres lots of good sugestions here in this thread already but all will cost money to do if youre wanting to keep that engine then add a tbi and match your ratios to your tire sizes to keep the rpms low or the other option is to change engines these vehicles were built when gas was cheap so fuel economy wasnt factored into the equasion Times have changed and gas isnt going to get cheaper Lots of American tourists scratched their heads at the english cars in the 60s like the Austin mini that got 50 miles to the gallon and we were paying 5.00 a gallon at that time

So maybe a 4 cylinder or a 4 cyl Perkins Diesel deisel ?? the options are only Limited by your pocketbook :D
