- 1978 cj7 304 v8 , 4speed which i think is out of a newer cj. Im pretty sure it has a stock transfer case.

Let's see... out of production for 26 years, the body & frame integrity of of silly putty in many parts of the country, and they were never the biggest selling vehicle ... Yeah, they are getting harder to spot.

Just like the Etzel, Studebaker, or Corvair; the Jeep gets rarer with every passing year. But Jeeps paved the way for 44 years for all these other wanna-be's out there today. Luckily, with so many loyal Jeep fans still left there are more aftermarket / replacement parts for Jeeps then any other vehicle made, but even those are dwindling.

I see them all the time but most of them are just sitting and have not moved in a long time. So I think there is still a lot of them just waiting for the right person to come along and save them.

I was at the Lake yesterday with a couple TJ's and there was CJ5 with the doors and top off. It was running up and down the hills with 5 college age kids hanging out of it with their shirts off checking out all the bikinis. 
Sure it wasn't safe, but I thought it was cool to see those kids doing that in a 5. Even gave them the wave a little later in the day.
30 years ago that was pretty common, seemed everyone was hanging onto roll bars or riding in the bed of the truck.

Which is why even a Jeep restored with a fiberglass body and welded up frame is still nice in my eyes. Just the fact that it is still kicking is all that matters.

4x4s and trucks in general suffer extinction faster than other vehicles. Think about the lifecycle of a car/truck...
1. New: washed, polished, taken care of; fully insured - wreck it - fix it like new
2. 3-6 yrs: Still nice; mostly maintained, mostly insured
3. 6-15 yrs: Getting rough, likely 3rd-5th owner; liability insurance; wreck it - either totaled or fixed to a minimum standard
4. 15+: Becoming "Vintage" nice ones get nicer
But with a 4x4 or truck, around Phase 3, they start getting "used" not just driven. There's no novelty in 12-year-old 4x4... it's just an affordable play or work vehicle. They get lifted, cut up, drive trains swapped... and it's downhill from there.
So even if Jeep made as many CJs as Chevy made Camaros (and assuming Jeep didn't use sea salt as a rust inhibitor), there'd still be far fewer CJs today.

I see a lot more CJ's for sale than old Camaros. Does that mean they are not out there or people are keeping them?

I think they are getting harder to find in good condition.
So, here's my 1965 bought new in 1967, for some reason the dealer never sold it, has 27,000 miles on it just brought it out of storage a few month back, last licensed 1984, giving her a tune up with some new parts , can't wait to get her going again.

Nice,reminds me of the 69' I had,snaping down that top was a bear of a job.We still have a few CJ's out here for sale,from rust to gliter.
