Auto vs. Manual

Auto vs. Manual
Im just going to have one of each. The Scrambler is gonna get an auto conversion this Summer. The CJ7 will stay with the T-176 .

Im waiting patiently for the Bright Guy to throw the Audi Transmission with paddle shifters in a Jeep. :) God that sounds like fun.

The possibility's are near endless. Horsepower is a no brainer...many of these Transmission are in high powered exotic cars....500, 600...1000 hp (Veyron). The ability to manually or electronicly dial down the hold back feature making downhill runs a thing you could quickly customize the Transmission to adapt to depending upon driver or trail needs.

The pros to a manual are ..

Low Rock Crawl Gearing, you can bump start or the best part is power start or crawl when you are in a bad spot. It does give you Slow control.Down hill is a lot easier. I have wheeled with guys who run an Auto they do work but you better have 4 wheel disc with the Big tires.

Your talking about front wheel drive Transmission . with over drive here. Yes they are expenceve to rebuild.
I'm talking about the old 3 speed Transmission that came in jeeps (tf727-GM Turbo 400 ) they are cheap and easy to rebuild.
The fact that you say you can hit the clutch before someone else hits reverse show you don't understand that you NEED to hit reverse.

Just finishing up a TF727 swap in my 85 CJ7 , gonna be much better on the rocks of the Black Hills than the old sloppy T-5 . It's only got a 2.73? first gear but I'll make up for that with 4:1 Transfer Case gears and just the shear toughness of the legendary Toruqe flite.

I've always had manuals on the street and have the fancy footwork to show for it. Managing 3 pedals, a shifter, and a steering wheel while trying to keep yourself perched on the top of a rock, with a 300 foot cliff next to you, is something that is not very fun to do.

up here in the mountains I prefer the stick but if I wheeled elsewhere I would prob opt in for a auto :chug:

Ok Old Dog!
Someone resurrected this old post for you.
The answer is...You should drive a manual because rock crawling in an automatic is like CHEATING!
:D
