Hey Guys,

So I've been battling with clearcoat flacking off on my CJ5 since I purchased it 2 years ago. The problem areas have been mainly the hood and the top of the fenders. I haven't seen any clearcoat flaking off anywhere else.

I just sanded down the hood and fenders with some areas to the bare metal to get all the flaking bits off, and then painted it with several layers of enamel paint.

I guess I have two questions. One is, do you think this is a factory clearcoat problem, or has somebody done a piss poor aftermarket paintjob? Second is, do you think the clearcoat that i painted over will start to flake off sooner or later?

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Cheers!

Josh

I have rarely seen factory clear coat flake off. My guess is that the PO did not do adequate prep work. Usually, clear coat flaking off is an indication of too much time between base and clear without additional prep. If your lucky, they only did the hood and fenders, and your problem has been solved. Hopefully, you did not spray clear coat over the enamel unless it was a base coat designed as a base / clear. Spraying clear coat over paints not intended as two steps does not work well.

Thanks Bud! I suspected the same thing. You figure if there was a problem with the factory paint job on a 35 year old Jeep, the clearcoat would be completely gone by now.

I didn't bother trying to spray on clearcoat over the base. I just used a semigloss enamel paint. It's not showroom, but it looks a hell of a lot better then it did before. :)

definately a bad prep job... sounds like you have it under control.. question, did you spray it or spray bomb it (spray paint) ? glad it looks better.any pic?

Thanks! Just posted some pics. Used a can of Dupli-Color enamel spray paint. looks good from a distance. :)

BTW I have NO idea why the pics are upside down. It was right side up, on my computer.
