Is there a sleeper winch out there that seems to be holding together and not busting the bank. Sure I could buy a box store winch. I will not be using it to much but want it to work when needed

I've got an XRC8 and it has never let me down through some serious long and steep pulls. I'd buy one again in a heart beat.

Wooly

You might try one of the Harbor Fright line of winches.

I read that the guy that designs the big HF winches was a VP for one of the other big name winch companies. Story goes that he wanted to reach the lower cost market with a good a quality winch. To do this it is still made in China, but the quality control is suppose to be tighter. I do not have any experience with this winch, but would consider it as an option for casual use. Rod

I've got to agree with woolyworm on the XRC8. Only problem I've had with mine was when I lost the cap off from the control plug and got some chit in it. Luckily wooly was there to haul my butt out with his.

I've had no problems from my XRC10

Does it have to be new? I bought a Warn used and had it refinished. I found it on the floor at my buddy's jeep shop.

Every once in a while I find one on Craigslist. :chug:

:agree: i bought a used ramsey 8000# with 150ft of cable for 300$ to get a equivalent one it would have been well over $1000

I've been using a Harbor Freight badlands 12k lbs for years. Right out of the box I had to replace on of the c clips on the roller fairlead but other than that it's been fine. Well worth the $300 cost

Seems to be a tie Harbour Freight and the XRC from Smitty Built. We do not have Harbour freight up here. The supper winch lp series is on for a good price.

Harbor freight will ship the winch, I think they still do a $7 or 8 flat rate. That's what I paid for mine shipped to my door. Closest one to me was over 200 miles. I also had a Smittybilt xrc8 on my CJ7 and had no problems with it either. I think I paid $300 shipped for that also

I bought the ENGO 9000 3 weeks ago for $279.00 and free shipping. Installed it 2 weeks ago but have not had to use it yet. Google Engo winches and check out the reviews.

Another one in the used winch camp. Most bang for the buck is to find an 8274 and rebuild it. For usually less than $500 you get as good as it gets.

Picked up a used 6,000 lb. warn a few years ago and have less than 3 bills in it. No complaints!

But I have been looking real hard at those Harbor Freight 12k Badland pullers. And at $299 with good reviews, it's getting harder to pass on :D.

My Warn is an integrated 8000lbs model. Very high quality. Refinished and mounted, with all the mounting hardware, for around 500, from what I remember. So around maybe 400 for the winch, which included it being repainted. I've been very happy with it. Used it the first time I went in the woods after installing.

We've been using the badlands 12,000 lb winch to pull equipment onto our gooseneck trailer that can't get up on its own I.E. rosco tru-pac 915 rollers with a curb weight of around 26k with ballast. It does it single line and hasn't failed in 2 years on the third wrap of cable. It does slow it down but hasn't tripped the breaker yet.)probably should get rid of excess cable) when the last $299.00 sale came up we got one for the jeep and used another coupon for the wireless remote.BTW if you go wireless definitely UNPLUG the wireless box when not in use as per the instructions! Mine seems to come on with cell phone interference!! And winch itself in.

Bought a Warn 8274 in '77. Still using it-:D
Nuff said.;)
LG

I'll almost bet that Tinman22 has used his HF winch more in 2 years (curb weight of 26K) that you have used your Warn since 1977. I'm not saying that the HF winch is better than your Warn, it it isn't a piece of unproved junk either.

The best part is when the hf winch gets stolen and it will.were only out a few hundred dollars and a 30 min trip to hf. Our equipment sits on the side of the road all summer long (paving co.) the last winch that was stolen I welded the bolts to the plate so it wouldn't walk away! They cut the entire plate and crossmember out to get the winch!!! Then just too show me how displeased they were for causing them to use there torches they cut the lock on the roller and took the injection pump (probably sold it for reimbursement of acetylene and oxygen)
