So I'm wondering what kind of options would be best when it comes to an engine block heater. Just a magnetic block heater for the oil pan? Where can I find these cheap?

In this part or the country they are a necessity.
I recommend the freeze plug type along with a pad type silicone to the bottom of your oil pan.
Some folks here also use a pad under their battery but I've never had any luck with those.

what is a freeze plug type? the first link didn't work
I'm not going to get one for the battery. It won't do much anyway.

A heater element that replaces one of your freeze plugs. There are hundred of these so be sure to get the correct one for your engine.

The tank type heaters work well also but they are a little more involved to install.
