i have a 75 CJ5 with the AMC 232 i6 that ran perfect then one day it started blowing ignition modules, im on the third one now and the last one lasted less than a week. has anybody else had this problem. wiring all seems to be right compared to my haynes manua and all grounds have been checked and are good? anybody have any ideas

It has been said that the quality of present day modules is not up to the old OEM standards, being made in some foreign land or another.
From what I have read the parts house should be able to check the module before you buy it. The other possibility is that it may be time for an MSD or an HEI upgrade. The ignition on that generation of Jeep was :dung: at very best.

I went through a series of ICM's a few years ago too. I had a budy that worked at NAPA at the time who said the same thing IO said, the reliability of those ICMs is :dung: at best, that's the reason they're only $25. You can either go to a different parts house, with the thought they'd be able to get a different batch, or like IO said, upgrade to an aftermarket ingition box.

One thing for sure, you will not regret doing the ignition upgrade.
And I will say that about any possible upgrade there is, over what you have.

alright thanks guys, what kind of system would you all reccomend upgrading to. it already has an MSD coil on it if that makes any difference?

What I would do is replace the distributer with a 1979 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l distributer with a ford 300 l6 cap, adapter and rotor. The MSD ICM is way cool and easy to install, don't go with the off road, it is harder to get warrantied, The GM HEI module is a cool thing too and a lot less expensive to put together.

THIS IS MY OPINION!! for what it's worth.:D

check out Jeephammers TFI upgrade.
I have to go or I would look it up for you.

I did a metric :dung: ton of comparissions before I upgraded my ignition box and I went with Summit's name brand box and coil. It's made by Mallory anyway, but I stuck with the stock distributor set-up.

Just like IO said, that's my 2¢ worth and it's what I did. Here's what I have to say, do your homework, compare the parts for what you do with your CJ and make a plan, don't just jump on something because it's what's popular today.

I'm not sure where your getting the modules, but I went through a couple
"parts store" ones before I spent the money on a real gm one. It's been going
strong for a few years now, and seems to run better than the cheap ones did.

I'd like to keep this one as cheap as possible due to the fact that im trying to sell this one to fund my 7 project, around how much does upgrading to those set ups cost and do i hav to change any of the other wiring for it?

the cheapest thing you could do would be to just wire in an HEI module to replace the stock one you are having so much problem with. Less than $100 I would think.:D
