Hi to all you seasoned CJ owners! I'm new but have been following this site for quite a while before I purchased a 1985 CJ7 . Always been a 4x4 person but only with all diesel trucks and this is my first Jeep. It seems grows on you very quickly .

Anyway I have many years of wrench turning knowledge between small vehicles, up to all our own heavy equipment, but I'm looking to see if anyone has had this problem and what you found:

All lights off with vehicle running No Brake Lights.
Marker lights on No Brake Lights.
Headlights on No Brake Lights
Turn signals on either direction Brake Lights Work??????

I would check the brake light fuse first, then the brake light switch.

The turn signals use the same filament in the bulb as the brake lights do. With one turn signal on the other brake light comes on with the pedal? If so you may have to do some tracing through the harness at the base of the steering column. You could also get feed back with signal on to the other brake light, which would be a short. Check all the wire connections out back, too.

start with the simple things first , check to make sure the tail lights are grounded good at the sockets , the emergency flashers could also cause some issues , as on these old autos when your flashers are on and you hit the brake the flashers will stop flashing and stay on,,

as yours is with with turn signal does it keep flashing when you hit the brake and the brake light works or does the turn signal quit flashing when you hit the brake and just lights up ? check your flasher relays , does the emergency flashers work ?

With the turn signal on in either direction the brake lights function correctly and the turn signal flashes correctly.

I know these are simple problems and I will gladly take them over
the problems with my Ford diesels:censored:

Thanks for the replies.

I would hold the brake on , and run a ground wire to the socket then to a good ground on the jeep to see if it would work
