Brake Pedal

I have a 1979 CJ5 and we are almost done putting it back together. I need to know what stops the brake pedal from coming to far. Now if you pump the brakes say to bleed them the pedle keeps bending he metal part that hits the brake light switch and it bends and the pedal starts coming up to far. It eventually starts hitting the dimer switch. Could someone take a picture of there CJ brake pedal and post it or email it to me.

Hey climberman are you refering to the top of pedal travel? sounds like you are but your post is a bit hard for me to follow. The pedal has a pin to stop return travel but should not reach that if the master cylinder push rod is correct and attached to the pedal because that should stop return travel.

I will look for a pin there most not be one because it doesn't stop coming up. as for the master cylinder the rod that connects to the pedal comes right out, it is not connected to the rest of the cylinder.

Im not sure what youve got going on by your description, but will snap a picture of a pedal assembly that is out of a cj today and post it later, in the event that helps you figure out what you got going on....

I was hoping that the pictures were from under a dash because there should be a bracket that stops the brake. It wouldn't be on the pedal assembly. Here is a picture of a part I have that I couldn't figure out were it goes. But it looks like something that would stop the brake just not sure how it would work it probably isn't anything.

That looks like a home made bracket to me. Looked at mine again and the rod to the brake booster linkage stops the return travel. You don't say if you are power or manual but do say the rod comes out of your master cylinder so I have to guess? you have manual and my original manual MS the rod is fixed in and does not fall out leaving me to think it performed the same job of stopping return.

I will go out this morning and take the master cylinder out and see what is going on. It was like that when I bought it the rod never stayed on I will look at it and see if I need to put it in different. But I installed a hydraulic clutch and in the instruction it said not to let the rod hit to the very end when the pedal comes up. You had to drill the hole just right.

I tend to think that's good advise but I am not seeing any other means, I did mention a pin but now I am not thinking it's the stop after further investigation. Looked at my old manual ms and the rod is held in place by circlips.

I took the master cylinder out just now and there is no way for that rod to stay in that is how the MS is built. Maybe I will have to make a bracket to stop the pedal.

sorry, I took the pictures of the cj in the barn, the dash is off, so it was rather easy, anyhow, I forgot to bring the camera home with me. Figures..I suffer from CRS !
