I broke the little plastic spring loaded contact button in the steering column. Where do I find one of those? I have searched using 'horn button' but get mainly the center piece for the steering wheel. I am also interested in what it takes to get the plastic piece out of the steering column that holds everything in.

If this doesn't make sense, I will post some pics when I get home later.

Also, I was going to buy a new steering wheel (probably Grant) and I see it needs an installation kit. If that includes the replacement for that spring loaded button and instructions on how to remove the old stuff, then I will just go that route.

Thanks

jeepardy is showing you this

Is that what is broken?
or this?

I broke 'button' and think I need to remove 'cover' to replace it. I also want to know where to get 'button'

Thanks

Good point. Any thoughts on how to remove the plastic 'cover' without damage?

I think you need a spring depresser, borrow from Auto zone or but for $15
the manual will illistrate the procedure better than I can describe it. there is a split ring on the shaft that you have to remove with the pressure off the shaft spring. this thing does it.:D

If you have one nearby I'd go for the complete kit from Harbor Freight. I thought I'd never need one and have used it 3 times on my rebuild already.

For removing the plastic cover, the best I can say is be careful and easy. The plastic is 25 yrs old and can be brittle. The three oblong holes are where it snaps. I took a small flathead screwdriver and slid between the metal and plastic and angled the tab away from the metal.

looks like this
when you use it only have to go far enough to take the tension off the "split ring"
some people use a scribe to pull the ring off i use 2 flathead screwdrivers the small one i push the ring down hold it in place then the 2nd screwdiver i twist to "ramp" the ring onto the 1st screwdriver then pry all around like a paint can ( works for me that way )
It can be a chore and i always would recommend that if youve gone that far check the turn signal cam for any crack then white lith it lightly then decide whether you should change the key lock cylinder ( your only 4 screws away

once you got the horn cam out check the spring is it collasped? stretch it out and test
or the brass retainer ring cracked or yet the plastic body? replace cam

oh once you get the ring off the plastic cover will come off with your hands and is attached to this you can leave attached

the previous owner couldnt get the horn to work, so he wired a switch on the floor that you step on. i kind of like it there. i have an automatic so i wont be stepping on it everytime i shift.

yeah, its kinda close. ill just have to get used to it

I'm new here. I have a 1985 CJ7 ... I'm the irina owner. I spent big bucks to get it derusted and maintenance updated. So now what I need your help.....

My horn doesn't work. I checked the horn, it's fine, checked the fuse, fine. I pulled off the steering wheel button - which didn't feel right - then took off the three screws and the horn button metal bowl (?). Under that, I find no wire or button. Looking at the few pics on this, it looks like the button that goes down to the blinker board (??) Is missing.

I plan on pulling the steeing wheel, but was wondering if anyone has a pic or 2 of what a 1985 jeep should look like under the steering wheel? ???

Thanks in advance!

James

PS... I'll try to upload a pic with the steering wheel on.
