Just wondering if anyone has ever priced out building a CJ from scratch using all new parts ordered from catalogs.

It has been done, There is a guy named Rick Russell who runs "Sidekick Maps" who built what he calls his AJ8 or an aftermarket Jeep. You could look him up:

 I wasn't planning on doing it! I was just curious if anyone ever tried to figure it out. It might be "fun" to call one of the Catalog Co's and tell them you wanted to buy everything needed to build a CJ to your specs and see what they say. ;) I'm guessing they'd probably hang up after they stopped laughing!

Yeah, you would need a lot of cash... A LOT.
It basically nickels and dimes you... and you would probably still need a donor Jeep for some parts you can't purchase.

Some time ago when I was scouring the web for CJ7 's, I came across either craiglist or ebay listings for some that were touted as '10-'11 models. In the description it stated they were built from the ground up with aftermarket components. They were in the $20-23k range. I guess it would get registered and licensed like a kit car?

I get the 'Just Empty Every Pocket' jokes but from the comments it sounds like you have to be poor to own a CJ? I've known people who have spent a lot more than that on just one speaker for their sound system. So what if they want to spend their money on doing something like that. I think it would be cool.

Honestly, a new CJ in the $20-23,000 range wouldn't be bad at all. What are they getting for new Wrangler type models today?

I built my CJ/YJ/TJ from a $50 frame purchased off of Ebay...$300 freight from Wyoming; $250 welding and straightening;...Every nut and bolt and washer was bought, found, fabricated, or reconditioned. Between 2004 and 2006 when I started it and put it on the road...I dropped about $6000 on it.

Since 'completing' it...I have easily dropped another $6000 in 'improvements'....Do what you want so that you have no regrets, and enjoy :chug:
