So I live in San Diego and have to deal with the SMOG nightmare that California feels it needs to be the leader of. Im rather new to older cars and their old school emission controls. I wouldn't mind getting the TBI kit but I currently do not have the $1200 laying around to get it. With that said does anyone know exactly what components I need to complete the emissions system? I am operating under the assumption that I have non of it.

check with your dmv. I doubt that it had any in 1976 so see what they say about regs for older cars / trucks. Could be that it doesn't require any since it didn't come from the factory with any. California...... naaah. the greenies will require something!

Have you even taken it in to see if it will pass? And if it doesn't pass they will tell you why then you will know what you need to do to get to pass.

It will need everything it left the factory having, air pump, egr, etc and all in working order and did I mention the stock carb and manifold. etc. etc.
Here is what my 78 had and passed smog with.
These are the only pics I had pre MPI but may help a bit, I do have all the take off stuff too.

I did check with the DMV and got a temp registration for a month and they just said that I had to pass SMOG cause the year cut off is 1975. Also, I did get it smogged back in 2006 and it was no where near passing but at the time I was stationed in Texas and they don't care what you drive there. Thanks for the Pics and info sasquch, they help a litttle. I know that all the intake components are stock and I'm pretty sure my exhaust system is still stock.

Maybe it won't be too horrible then?

FYI when I was your age smog was so bad that going into LA to visit my granny I never knew there were mountains(San Gabriels), so the smog natzi's have made a difference in our environment for sure.
It's not all bad.;)

Sasquach, I'd say that engine bay is cleaner than any air in cali. ;) Is that a light from a Chebby pickup truck mounted on your fender?

Yes it is. That pic was right after a body off rebuild and it now has some grime in there.;)

I remember too. I'm up in Northern Ca but we had no-PE days sometimes when it was really bad. It's so much better now.

Thats true there are benefits for sure I just wish the cutoff date could have 76 but hey what can you do? Well hopefully I can find all the parts and be able to drive my jeep around this summer. I appreciate the help.

Do you know what you need at this point? I have everything off my 78 that I was saving just in case but honestly I will never go back to a carburated engine again.
