I have an 83 with a T-5 that has never given me a bit of problems. I was getting heat through the shift boot from it drying out and cracking so I paid $40 on ebay for a new one. It came in and once I installed it, it was so stiff and new that it would pull itself out of gear back into neutral. That was annoying enough, but I paid for the boot so I was keeping it on. This was 2 days ago...... So yesterday I take it for a drive and it keeps pulling out of third into neutral so I shoved it into third and held it there.... tight. I heard a pop and all of the sudden I have no 3rd or 4th gear!! Now I'm really confused and I'm imagining everything that could have broken. Drive back home and pull the Transmission out and break it down. Not one single thing is wrong.... it's loose cause it's original and never rebuilt, so I need bearings badly, but nothing is wrong. I looked at the shift forks and the center piece that prevents it from dropping into two gears at once is pulled too far out and off of the shifter ring (whatever it's called). Somehow I pulled it forward enough to pull the shifter rod out of it, causing it not to be able to shift into 3rd and 4th anymore. (*I still had 1st, 2nd, 5th, and reverse)

I have never heard of this happening before, has anyone else? Also, is there anything I can change while in here to prevent over-travel?

So.... to review, by changing the shifter boot on my CJ7 I ended up having to pull my Transmission and break it completely down. Welcome to my world.

Well I do have a crappy story with sweet ending...So I bough this NV4500, looked gorgeous on the inside.....PO lied said he changed his mind rebuilding it... lid wouldn’t fit I thought it was because of the missing bearings, little did I know it’s a 95 and up case with 92-94 gears and lid, months later when I got the necessary rebuild parts I discovered they are not compatible

On to the new case, finished the build, was happy, bought a gallon of the $25 a quart special oil in it got it installed drive it and noticed it was leaking pretty good got it pulled out

And after sand blasting it I found this:

Thankfully a member on here sent me a link of a good Transmission in his area and they shipped it to me and now that’s the one that’s in my Jeep
