The new to me 84 CJ7 i6 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with msd6a ignition has a nasty birds nest of wire going on under the dash. I'm a new jeeper and have been scouring the forums with alot of success. Managed to get the headlights working. (absolutely love love love the floor mounted dimmer switch) why on earth did they do away with those?

Windshield washer is now functional, sure it doesn't reset and only has one speed but damnit it turns on when I turn the switch. I'll learn to time it when I need to shut it off.

The horn (6 trumpet dukes of hazard sounding beast) is also now working.

I've been giving the fuel and temp gauges a thorough inspection thanks following the links that y'all have provided, but I'm not much closer to success. Me thinks my harbor freight multimeter might be worth what I paid for it.

So on to my questions. While contorting myself under the dash I came along this little bugger near the non functioning tach. View attachment 10859

The brown blurry connector. I can't seem to find what it Is for in my chilton manual.

Here's the second and third mystery connectors. View attachment 10860

These are located near the fuse box.

I am contemplating ripping all of it out and going with a painless or similar harness, but fear that I would then have a non running jeep with electrical issues as opposed to my current running jeep with electrical issues.

Any help identifying these would be greatly appreciated.

:)Well the good news is there is not a lot of circuits in that 84........so what doesn't work and what are you missing? Heater, Radio, AC, 4-ways,lights, turn signals. Might be some dead end connections for accessories you do not have. trace them back to the fuse block and see what there marked as. ...........process of elimination...

Horn, wipers,Head tail brake lights all working. Blinkers good and the oil pressure and volt meter work. Engine fires right up. Everything else having to do with electricity is dead. All the smog systems have been pulled so I kinda suspect that the un identified connectors might have belonged with that system. I figured the connectors were so big that they must go to something important. ;4)

Truly amazing how fast the day goes by when your working on a jeep.

Receo,

:)You sound like you can get things up and running again , just a process of elimination to trace the wires back to the switch or source. I'm sure some other guys will chime in with similar vehicles that have seen those plugs before.
Good Luck!

Receo - Having just wired up the dash in my 75, I think I can help a little. The larger plug in the second photo attaches to the headlight switch. It's the same style connector that was on my Painless harness. I'm pretty sure the smaller plug attaches to the brake light switch. The plug in the first pic maybe for the heater?

Hope that helps some. Good luck - Bill :chug:

Awesome! Thanks for the help. The headlamp is currently running direct wired to an after market rocker switch. I don't have the oem headlight switch but from looking at pics of them I think your correct. I never considered how the original owner wired the breaks because they work fine. I'll add that to the list of things to investigate.
