My CJ7 is equipped with Howell TBI. I have a engine warning light hooked up as directed. Earlier today I was hooking up some stereo wires and touched one of the waring light leads to the dash and shorted it out. I heard a fuse pop, but cant find the fuse. Whatever fuse it is, it also powers the electric fuel pump for my fuel injection, cuz it's out too.

So now I have no warning light and can't drive my Jeep to a qualified technician to get it fixed. I've read the Howell Installation manual and found the two power fuses next to the Fuel pump relay. Both fuses are OK, but theres no power going to one of them.

If this system has an additional fuse or fuses, I can't find them. The manual refers to an ECM fuse block, but I cant find it. I've looked all over my heater box by the ECM, but all I can find is the harness exiting through the firewall. Anybody know where the fuse is that powers the engine diagnostic light and the fuel pump? There's a beer in it for you if you make it simple enough for me to do myself.

First run a wire from the positive side of the battery to the coil, see if it starts. :)

Not sure about the fuel pump though? I always have extra wires so I can jump all the relay systems. You need to start there.

The other fuse block comes off the main harness, it's maybe 2" long and holds 3 or 4 fuses. If you follow the harness from the ecm you should find it. Since you can put it where ever you want there's no telling where the PO put it or where they got the power from.

The starter turns over, but I don't hear the fuel pump. The fuel fuel pump should turn on with the first click of the ignition switch. I'll try to trace the harness again. Thanks.

Mine is mounted on the firewall by the fuel pump relay. It has two wires going to it sealed in a waterproof plug. Its black in color and has the lift clip to release and pull it out.It don't look like a fuse holder but holds a 15 amp fuse.Mine is on the battery side.

Thanks. I found it under the dash. At the same time I installed fuel injection, I also installed a Painless Wire harness. It's a spaghettifest under there.

Not meaning to hijack this thread btw. Just bought an 85 CJ7 with Howell F.I. and have been researching the engine warning light, or check engine, or service engine soon, (that may be for Wranglers) on the internet. Mine doesn't seem to have one at all. Does anyone know if this light, gauge, whatever comes with the kit, or does the installer (not me) buy an after market one? I'm confused about this. Any thoughts? Thanks!

You can by an after market button 12vdc light radio shack or summit racing.I don't know where its wired into.I can look in my Jeep and see unless someone here has a schematic.Lights are about 1/2 in diameter most of the time their red in color.Drill a hole where ever you want it.Computer blinks the light code to you after the fault. You have to jumper a wire to get it to blink.I think you can buy a ODB1 tester for GM also for a direct plug in to your ADL plug.
Let me know if you want me to take a look and see where mine hooks up

Mike, I just wonder if I even need one?? The HFI works fine without. Thanks.

No not really.I'll tell you about sensors being bad and a few other things. You should have a [ADL connector think I'm missing a letter on this]under the dash hooked to the Howell Computer. Its about 3/4" wide and 2" long.If you by a ODB1 code checker for GM it'll do the same thing for checking for trouble codes. It's about 20 bucks. The code check listing are in your Howell manual or on their website www.howellefi.com
I think.I have the manual if you can't find them.

Mike, yea I think I see it hooked up to the computer. Could get a better look by pulling out the glove box, but that's not happening right now. I'll semi assume (for now) it's there and not worry about a warning light. Thanks for your help! Appreciate it.
Jeff

Glad to help, you can always pick up a tester at most auto stores if you need it.They put them where the old ecm was.PIA to get to.There also should be a fuse block there about the same size
Mike

Jeff, you will need the check engine light to pass smog. I hear you even need to label it. The Howell system has a diagnostic lead, but I think mine is wired to my Painless Harness.

He's got a point there.Might have to get it on before the next smog test

It just passed smog 2 months ago with the PO so I'm fine till next time. Maybe the tech guy didn't check, or didn't know to.
